An astronaut crashlands on a strange planet where the monkey/human roles are reversed. but breaks out of the lab thanks to his friendship with some liberal chimps. The shocking final image is one of the delights of cinema. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I the "In! (15) (Robert Altman. US. 1992) Tim Robbins. Greta Scacchi. Fred Ward. Peter Gallacher. 124 mins. Altman's satire on the wheeling and dealing of modern day Hollywood is more than just an excuse for cineastes to play trainspotter with the famous faces in cameo roles. It is also a terrific thriller about a studio exec receiving death threats from a spurned writer. Tim Robbins is magnificent in the lead role. while Altman manages to grin as he bites the hand that feeds him. Strathclyde: UC1 East Kilbride.

Haynes‘ low- budget triptych pulls together three separate stories with ‘deviance‘ as the linking theme. The Jean Genet-influenced third section. 'Homo'. has attracted most flak over is lurid depiction of prison love. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I It!” the I“ W (PG) (Zhang Yimou. China/Japan. 1991) Gong Li. Ma Jingwa. He Caifei. Cao Cuifeng. 125 mins. Zhang. director of la Don and Red Sorghum. again combines exquisitely beautiful photography with formalised melodrama. but this time creates one of the most moving films to appear anywhere on the world circuit in recent years. Essentially the tale of a young girl forced to become a concubine and the jealousies she encounters in her fortress home. it also acts as a metaphor for the repression of individual passions in post- Trananmen China. Ballerina Shearer is torn between an autocratic impressario and a starving young composer as she dances her way towards madness. Remarkably serious treatment of the subject matter is helped by superlative design and cinematography in this classic piece of Powell/Pressburger expressionism. Glasgow: GFl‘.

A gang of hoods. known only to each other by colour-coded nicknames. meets at an abandoned warehouse to figure how out their rigorously planned heist went so drastically wrong. The best debut in years from writer-director Tarantino. whose stylish violence seduces the audience into complicity. Brilliant in every sense of the word. Glasgow: Odeon. Fife: Adam Smith. IAMMMMPGHRoben Redford. US. 1992) Craig Sheffer. Brad Pitt. Torn Skerritt. 124 mins. A fine. lyrical piece by director Redford describing the love and loyalty of two contrasting brothers in Montana early this century. Based on Norman Maclean's semi- autobiographical novel. it fuses the Scots Presbyterian lifestyle of American settlers with a true understanding of nature. Wonderful performances. beautiful photography: altogether a perfectly crafted film about human

I no llarrar Pietra (l8) (Jim Shannan. UK. 1975) Tim Curry. Susan Sarandon. Barry Bostwick. Meat Loaf. 100 mins. The cult film to end all others. this rock spoof on old horror movies has created a breed of Rocky Horror crazies. and packs them in at late shows everywhere. The film has its moments. and Cuny is splendidly camp as the bisexual Frank N. Furter. With the added attraction (distraction?) of sing-along dance troupe The Creatures Of The Night. Central: Allanpark.
I Seat of I I“ (15) (Martin Brest. US. 1992) Al Pacino. Chris O‘Donnell. James Rebhorn. 156 mins. A blind. alcoholic ex- serviceman and a scholarship college boy spend Thanksgiving Weekend in New York and find themselves in a series of funny and moving adventures which finally lead them to come to terms with their true selves. Overlong in its opening and closing scenes. this is still one terrific movie. with what is possibly Pacino's best performance in a distinguished career. Edinburgh: UCI.
I Sea Of 1.010(18) (Harold Becker. US. 1989) Al Pacino. Ellen Barkin. John Goodman. Michael Rooker. 118 mins. Pacino. a homicide
detective in search of a murderer whose crimes seem to be connected with the personal ads. sets up a date with single mother Barkin. and. although attracted to her. begins to suspect that she is the killer. The plot may be on the creaky side. but the performances from both leads are spot-on. the dialogue and the sex scenes are remarkably realistic. However. the film is more likely to be remembered for its humour than for its tension. Edinburgh: Cameo.

The second offering to be developed as a feature film from Kieslowski's television Dekalog (Ten Commandments). Teenage postal clerk Tornek falls obsessively in love with the enigmatic artist on whom he routinely spies in her apartment. Eventually. he plucks up the courage to approach her. but his notions of love are soon to be dispelled by an experience that is to alter both their feelings. Concentrated and probing investigation of the nature of our affections. Edinburgh: Cameo.

The way it's been sold you'd think it was some total guitar hardcore odyssey vibe. but in fact it's a honey-coated romance that just happens to take place in Seattle. There's a high recognition factor for twentysornethings in the audience as they watch the ensemble cast find its way around misdirected crushes. parties from hell and crap gigs. I Slacker (15) (Richard Linklater. US. 1991) Over 100 Texans. 97 mins. Unclassifiable piece of independent American moviemaking which doesn't have a plot as such; instead it provides a snapshot of over 100 'slackers‘ — young. happy- go—lucky drifters - as they get through their daily lives. Structured as a monumental relay (each character briefly appears. meets the next. and so on). it has a loose. experimental. almost jazzy format that you‘ll either love or hate. A sure-fire cult hit if it can find its audience in the first place. Glasgow: GFI‘.
I Salt T”, III! M (15) (Stefan Schwartz. UK. 1992) Peter Capaldi. Elaine Collins. Richard Wilson. 91 mins. A Scot living in London has to return home to his native Glasgow for a family party. but meets various hazards on the road north. not the least of which is the slightly bizarre Yvonne. Capaldi's script perfectly captures that typically Scottish balance of innocent charm and sly humour. Not in the fast lane. perhaps. but motoring steadily towards its destination. Glasgow: GFI‘. I M (12) (Jon Amiel. US. 1993) Richard Gere. Jodie Foster. Bill Pullman. 114 mins. The plot of The Return of Martin Guerre goes wandering for a few years before emerging from the mists of the American Civil War in the shape of Jack Sommersby (Gere). who’s not quite the man his wife (Foster) remembers. She's in love. but a court has to decide the genuineness of his claims. As effective as a thriller as the original but the central pairing lacks the spark that would really have set it on fire. General release.
I Th. Md M802) (Zhang Yrmou. China. 1992) Gong Li. Lei Lao Fheng. Ge Zhijun. 100 mins. Zhang makes a departure from the opulent beauty of la Dou and Raise the Red Lantern with this documentary-style tale of a shy. pregnant woman who refuses to accept the injustice dealt out to her husband. Again the role of women in society is highlighted and again Gong Li is superb as her resilience is pitted against the unfeeling authorities. A masterly performance. See review. Glasgow: GFT. Dancefloor hopeful Scott Hastings incurs the wrath of the Australian Dance Federation by using his own steps in competition. loses his partner and his friends. but finds love and artistic integrity with the local wallflower. The buddy/road movie genres are turned on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. On one level. the film is
the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine; just as importantly. it's an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

Three mini-martial artists use their grandfather's training to help their FBI agent dad nail a baddie. Sort of Home Alone meets the Turtles (minus the suits) as the youngsters in the audience cheer their on-screen heroes as they kick the poo-poo out of a startlingly inept adult world. Glasgow: Odeon. The casting of sundry rap stars and much jazzy MTV visual frippery can‘t pump any new life into the well-worn storyline of assorted parties fighting it out over a large chunk of stolen loot. Ambitious adaptation of Milan Kundera's complex novel about a wornanising Czech brain surgeon who falls in love for the first time with a doe-like small-town beauty at the time of the Russian invasion of 1968. A dawdling and rather austere narrative is given some spice and interest by an overwhelming eroticism. a beautifully judged evocation of Prague and gorgeous photography. Edinburgh: Cameo.

A darkly disturbing western which destroys the genre's traditional notions of clear-cut good and evil. instead presenting violent acts as physically and psychologically painful for victim and

Michael and Karen Carr are about to discover. While touching a few suburbanite nerves. Kaplan's predictable shocker is really just another ‘yuppies in peril’ thriller. yawned through already in The Hand That Rocks The Cradle. Edinburgh: Cameo. IWMEI‘IHIOWUSHWim Wenders. Gennany/US/Japan/Australia. 1992) Solveig Dornrnartin. \Vrlliam Hurt. Sam Neill. 158 mins. After having been chased across the world by various nefarious types. Claire Tourneur (Dommartin) and lover Trevor (Hurt) end up in an Aussie underground lab. with nuclear annageddon around the corner. The sci- fi and ‘female Peer Gynt' elements don’t gel. but Wender's flawed rock'n‘roll-powered odyssey does have its own kind of fascination. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

You‘ve got to have hopes to survive life in Southall. even if you're up against friends. family and the British record industry just because you're the world‘s first Asian country and western band. Rohmer's latest offering is a typically downbeat affair. framed around the moral dilemmas of a hairdresser and the men in her life. Brilliantly suffused with the unglarnorous atmosphere of French suburbia. it may not be to everyone's taste. but bear with it because it’s a very different piece of cinema. Central: MacRobert.
