INDEX FILM

route manage to exchange one of their cases for an electronic detonator. Ilis wife's disappearance is soon to pitch Ford into a plot involving international espionage and the murky Parisian underworld. A partial return to form for Polanski after the soggy Pirates. But it is only partial. because this attempt at the Hitchcock genre is rather dog-cared and sluggish. though the cast is worth watching. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Frogs (15) (George McCowan. US. 1972) Ray Milland. Sam Elliot. Joan Van Ark. 90mins. An environment-unfriendly millionaire finds his family and friends under attack on his paradise island from a mutating species of amphibian. Surprisingly good ‘nature strikes back‘ movie. with touches of Agatha Christie as the humans are knocked off one by one. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Groundhog Day (PG) (Harold Ratnis. US. 1993) Bill Murray. Andie MacDowell. Chris Elliot. TV weatherman Phil Conners (Murray) finds himself in the back of beyond. trapped in an ever-repeating single day. Partying and babe- chasing leads to serious romancing as he goes after his producer (MacDowcll). Murray's cuddly sarcasm stops the movie from becoming the kind of moralising mush that surrounds so many of his contemporaries. At last. a Ilollywood comedy that is really funny. See Screen Test and preview. General release. I Hoffa (15) (Danny DeVito. US. 1992) Jack Nicholson. Danny DeVito. J.T. Walsh. 135 mins. At long last Jack gets a decent leading role that .ets him act instead of overact. A biopic of the US Teamster Union boss. it presents the historical tacts about his mafia connections without ever really revealing what exactly kept him so faithful to the labour movement. DeVito's direction is at times showy. but there is a genuine attempt to get at the man behind the myth . . . provided you care about who he was in the first place. Strathclyde: Magnum. I Housesltter (PG) (Frank 07.. US. 1992) Steve Martin. Goldie llawn. Dana Delany. Spttmed by his childhood sweetheart. architect Newton Davis (Martin) finds his life turned upside down when one-night-stand Gwen (Hawn) moves into his house and passes herself off to parents and neighbours as his new wife. The lies they tell to protect and exploit each other snowball with a sparky unpredictability. making this a more welcome comedy than any of both stars' more recent attempts. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Howard: End (PG) (James Ivory. UK. 1992) Anthony Hopkins. Vanessa Redgrave. Helena Bonham Caner. Emma Thompson. 142 mins. After a succession of dreary Forster clones. the British film industry gets round to tackling his masterpiece. and one of the most important novels of the 20th century. The story. centring on the marriage between a wealthy and reactionary old duffer and an emancipated younger woman. is a complex family chronicle told with clarity and compassion. At last a cinematic period drama that exudes excellence. with some finely crafted perfonnances to match. Edinburgh: Dominion. I Indecent Proposal ( l 5) (Adrian Lyne. US. 1993) Demi Moore. Robert Redford. Woody Harrelson. 117 mins. Suave bastard Redford offers poverty-stricken yuppies Moore and Harrelson a million dollars if he can sleep with the lady and dilemma ensues. Killer base material. but Lyne makes a towerineg abominable film out of it. Cavernoust empty stuff. a worse film than even The Bodyguard and likely to be every bit as successful. See review. General release. I Indochina (12) (Regis Wargnier. France. 1992) Catherine Deneuve. Vincent Perez. Lihn Dan Pham. 156 mins. Lush. irresistably romantic tale of a French colonial (Deneuve) running a rubber plantation in 1930s Vietnam. who falls in love with a naval officer while the country borders on rebellion. Reminiscent of Gone With The Wind and the great epics of David Lean. its music is by Glasgow-bom composer Patrick Doyle (Henry V). Edinburgh: Cameo. I Jacob's Ladder (18) (Adrian Lyne. US. 1990) Tim Robbins. Elizabeth Pena. Danny Aiello. 113 mins. Vietnam vet Jacob Singer is seeing some very strange things. like nurses with demons' horns and people with faces straight out of a Francis Bacon painting. As his grip on the reality of his present life begins to slip. he has recurring flashbacks to the night his platoon was wiped out during the war. The director of Fatal Attraction and the writer of Ghost combine to pull off one of the most terrifying. yet ultimately moving. paranoia thrillers of recent years. Glasgow: Grosvenor. I Johnny Suede (15) (Tom DiCillo. US. 1991) Brad Pitt. Richard Boes. Catherine Keener. Nick Cave. 97 mins. Already a cult item on home turf. DiCillo‘s debut is a contemporary morality tale centring on a would-be rockstar. whose musical and hairstyle inspiration is Ricky Nelson. Wryly funny look at an absurd world contains some excellent cameo performances from Keener as his instructive girlfriend and Cave as a platinum

pompadoured rocker. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Jungle Book (U) (Wolfgang Reitherman. US.

1967) With the voices of George Sanders. Louis Prima. 78 mins. Growing up in the jungle. young Mowgli learns from the animals around him. Enjoyable Disney. a long way after Kipling. but the songs are wonderful. General release.

I The Last of his Tribe (PG) (Harry Hook. US. 1992) Jon Voigt. Graham Greene. 90 mins. Harry (Kitchen Toto, Lord of the F lies) Hook just hasn't ever made it to the mainstream with his environmentally aware movies. Here he retells the true story of the friendship between the lone survivor of California's Yahi people and the Berkeley anthropologist who studied him. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I 1.6010 (18) (Jean-Claude Lauzon. Canada. 1992) Maxime Collin. Ginette Reno. Gilbert Sicoite. 107 mins. A French Canadian boy escapes from the increasing insanity of his family life into a bizarre series of fantasies. in which he is the offspring of his mother and a sperm-laden Sicilian tomato. Lauzon dives deeper into the darkly funny and painfully sad aspects of sexual awareness and adolescence. A unique. beautifully visual treat. See review. Glasgow: GET.

I loaded Weapon 1 (PG) (Gene Quintano. US. 1993) Etnilio Estevez. Samuel L. Jackson. Tim Curry. 83 mins. A new low in spoofery which is a good deal less funny than the Lethal li’eapon series it's supposed to be sending up. Sad. overstretched stuff with a welter ofemharrassed looking guest stars. General release.

I Lorenzn’s 0" (12) (George Miller. US. 1992) Susan Sarandon. Nick Nolte. Zack O'Malley Greenburg. 135 mins. When the stubbornness of science meets the itnmovable object of parenthood. it‘s Augusto and Michaela ()done who win through in order to search for a cure for their dying son. Based on a true. on-going story. Lorenzo '5 Oil has none of the cutseyness of many sick kiddies movies. mainly because the genuine emotion comes not from images of dying children but from the courage of the adults. Susan Sarandon is magnificent. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Fife: Adam Smith. I Malcolm X (15) (Spike Lee. US. 1992)Denze1 Washington. Angela Bassett. Al Freeman Jr. 201 mins. Long-awaited and tnuch needed biopic of Black political activist Malcolm X charts the life of the man from street hood to Muslem leader. An epic worthy of the name. both thematically and cinernatically. as Lee brings the integrity and intelligence of a much-misunderstood figure to the masses. Washington's faultless perfomiance helps us through some of the tnore weighty passages. Strathclyde: Magnum.

I Mean Streets (18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1973) Harvey Keitel. Robert de Niro. David Proval. 110 mins. Tony's Bar is the base for four young Italian-Americans. whose increasingly illegal activities lead to tragedy. Vividly observed character study which combines breathtaking technique with a pervasive sense of corruption. Keitel and de Niro give of their very best. Glasgow: Grosvenor. Central: MacRobert. I Meet the Applegates (15) (Michael Lehman. US. 1990) Ed Begley Jr. Stockard Channing. Cami Cooper. Dabney Coleman. 82 mins. Lehman's follow-up to the wonderfully black comedy Heathers is an off -beat satirical comedy about the green movement's struggle against consumerism. Posing as an ornery. mid-Westem family led by blue-eyed patriarch Begley. the Applegates are in fact a gang of giant Brazilian insects charged with the subversive duty of extinguishing the environmentally unsound human race. But of course. the temptations of American decadence can be seductive . . . Gentle satire-with a slimy underbelly. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I "lune at $3 flare (PG) (Henri-Georges Clouzot. France. 1950) Louis Jouvet. Daniele Delorme. Bourvil. 95 mins. A brighter comedy than most of Clouzot's works. in which a girl is sent to a strict school. but still manages to find a time for her naive lover despite her mother's best efforts. Edinburgh: French Institute.

I W Nanny (PG) (Michael Gottlieb. US. 1992) Hulk Hogan. Sherman Hemsley. Austin Pendleton. 84 mins. Ilulk Hogan follows the successful Suburban Commando with a film that owes something to Home Alone. This time he's a bodyguard rOped into looking after two destructive kids who like nothing better than setting booby-traps for their nannies. For the kids only. General release.

I Mr Satmtay NIIM (15) (Billy Crystal. US.

1992) Billy Crystal. David Paymer. Julie Warner.

119 mins. The life of fictional stand-up comedian Buddy Young Jnr is full of laughter. tears. heartache. smiles and all that other sentimental on-stage crap. And that‘s the way it should be. as Crystal's directorial debut proves through a portrait of a lonely figure who lives for the applause ‘Willy Loman with laughs'. Assured direction. fine acting. but a tendancy to indulge in sentimentality. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. All UCls.
