AGENDA
_ Bike charge
Plans to charge cyclists 23 every time they take their bike on a train has been criticised by Labour MPs and environmental groups. The flat fare on bikes and other large objects is being considered by BB Regional Railways, which includes Scotliail. Cyclists on the Glasgow-Edinburgh line and lnterCity services already pay extra, but the new proposal would now include all routes except those using Strathclyde PIE trains.
Opponents argue that, even with the
option of a 215 weekly ticket, the charge on bikes would make car travel a viable alternative, thereby increasing traffic, congestion and pollution. It is also claimed that groups such as musicians would be unfairly hit and that charging extra for skls could have a detrimental effect on the tourist industry. Appeals have been made to Scotliall to take an independent decision and reject the charges, scheduled for mid-May. (AM)

I Chris Hani: The ANC flag will be flown at half mast by Lothian Regional Council as a mark of respect for Chris Hani. the General Secretary of the South African Communist Party and executive member of the ANC who was murdered earlier this month. People of the region are invited to sign a book of condolences, which will be sent to the Anti-Apartheid movement to be bound and collated with many other signatures from throughout the world. On Friday 23 April, the book will be available 9am—3.30pm in the Regional Chambers, and from Monday 26 in the reception area of the Regional Headquarters.
I History In trust: All aspects of the rich history of Scottish working people will be collected and preserved if the aims of an independent body can be achieved. The Scottish Working People‘s History Trust hopes to raise enough funds to employ at least one full-time permanent project worker
who would: search for source materials such as diaries, posters and photographs detailing the history of relevant individuals. organisations and events; undertake tape-recording of recollections of working people for publication and broadcasting; and edit and publish documentary materials. with an eye to making radio, video, television and film productions. All work would be carried out in consultation with local libraries, other historical societies, organisations and interested parties. Donations towards establishing a basic fund of £200,000 should be sent to John Henry, Treasurer SWPHT, Bridgend Cottages. 21 Old Dalkeith Road. Edinburgh EH16 4TE. General enquiries about the Trust‘s work should be made to Ian MacDougall. Secretary SWPHT, 2| Liberton Brae. Edinburgh EH16 6AQ. I Cross-Media grants: Seven projects involving more than one artform have been selected for the first package of grants from the Scottish Arts Council’s Cross-Media Fund. Glasgow's Tramway, perhaps the UK‘s prime venue for cross-media events. will play host to two of the recipients — NVA's Mayfest production of Sabotage received £30,000, while Theatre Process 10—28 was awarded £4000 towards its site-specific project based on James Joyce's Finnegan '3‘ Wake.
I Football tickets: Prices as high as £25 for English football matches at club level should not be copied north of the border, according to Nigel Griffiths, Labour‘s consumer spokesman. The MP for Edinburgh South has asked Scottish Sports Minister Sir Hector Monro to monitor the situation, arguing that younger fans are being unfairly penalised. Griffiths has called an inquiry into admission prices in England as the cost of a ticket has soared way past the rate of inflation. Some English Premier clubs charge £14 for their cheapest seats, whereas in Scotland prices at Premier grounds average between £6 and £10.
I Stafford Centre Benefit: Deaf Heights Cajun Aces, the Sandy Bell's Ceilidh Band and the Grassmarket Project are all on the bill for a fundraising concert in aid of the Stafford Centre, Edinburgh's drop-in facility for people with mental health problems. The Assembly Rooms will provide the venue, which also includes an auction of pop and rock memorabilia. Tickets, priced £5 (£2.50) are available from the Assembly Rooms or the Stafford Centre in Stafford Street.
