V DRAMA HORSE PLAY
s!
The End oi the Beginning: Jamieson's debut for Winged Horse last year
Strindberg is one oi that reassuring genre of Swedes who, no matter how depressed you become, will always be more miserable.
So it’s hardly surprising that Eve Jamieson should be turning to the man who makes lbsen look lightweight at a time when circumstances have, to say the least, been decidedly gloomy. llo sooner had she taken over the iourteen-year-old company, Winged Horse, than the Sean D’Casey project bequeathed her by the departing Artistic Director became embroiled in a publicity stunting wrangle. The prominence given to a production of exactly the same show by a diiierent company during the Irish Drama Festival prevented her many new and
ambitious policies irom getting oii to a ilying start, but worse was to iollow when the Scottish Arts Council reiused the company’s yearly grant application. lindaunted, but doubtless somewhat pissed oii - ‘there was unanimous disappointment’ says the press release - Jamleson got underway with Play Strindberg - The Dance oi Death.
As plays on which to launch Arts council iunding appeals go, this three- hander is an adventurous choice. Friedrich Durrenmatt’s re-worklng oi the sad Swede’s marital tragedy doesn’t have the sort oi title which suggests a simple anagram for Instant Box Diilce Success, but .lamleson is quick to point out that ‘Euro writer’ does not necessarily equate with ‘Turgid llavei Cazing’.
‘It’s an enormous comedy,’ she protests. ‘iie’s got a dry, thy sense oi humour.’ The dehydrated laughs are packed within a tightly structured ‘lles-withln-lies’-type plot. ‘It’s very demanding tor the audience,’ explains Jamleson, ‘you never know who’s telling the truth, who’s lying, who’s manipulating whom - and why! The characters carp, whinny and belch out vitriolic bile and blackness in a series at short, sharp shocks.’ That Jamieson Isn’t doing the same is a marvellous triumph oi magnanlmlty. (Stephen Chester)
