I The Killing Floor (18) (Bill Duke. US. 1985) Damien Leake. Alfre thxiard. Clarence Felder. 117 mins. Back before Spike Lee had made a name for himself. Bill (Deep (bi-er) Duke had gotten to grips with that neglected part of American history. the role of the black man in the trade union movement. Beginning during WW1. it follows a sharecropper from the Deep South who comes to Chicago and eventually finds himself persuading his fellow black workers to fight for improved working conditions. I King Of New York ( 18) (Abel Ferrara. US. 1990) Christopher Walken. David Camso. Larry Fishburne. Victor Argo. Wesley Snipes. 10-1 mins. Extremely violent and amoral account of New York drug lord Frank White (Walken). who kills quite a few people but is really a decent cove. whose dream is to open a hospital for the people of his native South Bronx. A twisted tale of criminal loyalty and glamorised violence which wastes the considerable talents of its leading actor. At least Arnie does it with a sense of humour. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

As World War 11 siphons off America's baseball players. attention turns to the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. I Malcolm X ( IS) (Spike Lee. US. 1992) Denzcl Washington. Angela Bassett. Al Freeman Jr. 201 mins. long-awaited and much needed biopic of Black political activist Malcolm X charts the life of the man from street hood to Muslem leader. An epic worthy of the name. both thematically and cinematically. as Lee brings the integrity and intelligence of a much-misunderstood figure to the masses. Ten years after the demise ()f Jean de Florette. the Soubeyrans run a prosperous carnation farm. Steering this epic rural saga towards the realms of Greek tragedy. this is a full and satisfying second half that explores the suffering ()f the
guilty as they pay a crippling penance for man's greed and envy. The production values are as high as ever and Auteuil assumes Depardieu‘s mantle in his development from glaikit idiot to broken-hearted suitor. Edinburgh: Cameo.

It's Christmas time. and nasty old miser Scrooge (Caine) needs taught a lesson by three seasonal ghosts. A slow-wilted. gentle giant and his resourceful. protective side-kick search for work in Depression-hit America. captures the androgyny of the perfect Everyman/woman. while director Potter creates from Virginia Woolf ‘3 novel a humorous and visually splendid succession of episodes that is a constant joy to watch. Though irTevocably dated by now. this is still notable as the film that articulated the until-then unrecognised experiences and aspirations of a whole generation and does of course contain our favourite nostalgia icon in full flow.
