I Blade Runner: The Director's Cut (15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1982/92) Harrison Ford. Sean Young. Rutger Hauer. I 16 mins. ()ut go the pseudo-noir narration and the tacked-on happy ending; in comes a more defined sense that Deckard himself may be a replicant. The look and feel remain as powerful. and the acting is superb. A flawed masterpiece is now a restored masterpiece. Glasgow: GFT. Edinburgh: Cartteo. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride.

I Blue Eyed (15) (Reinhard Hauff. Germany. 1989) Gotz George. 88 mins. A German living in Argentina closes his eyes to the acts of the junta just like a passive German citizen in the Third Reich. ~An action film that also acts as a psychological analysis of the mentality of fellow travellers. I Bob Roberts ( 15) (Tim Robbins. LS 1992) Tim Robbins. Alan Rickman. Giancarlo Esposito. Gore Vidal. 103 tttins. Man-of-the- moment Robbins takes over as director. writer and star of this wonderfully sharp satire on contemporary American politics. The eponymous Roberts is a right-wing folk singer with senatorial ambitions. appearing here in a mocked-up Spinal Tap type documentary. Furtny and pertinent. Glasgow: GF'T. Edinburgh: Cartteo.

I The Bodyguard (15) (Mick Jackson. US. 1992) Kevin Costner. Whitney Houston. Gary Kemp. 130 mins. Costner tries dubious tough guy mode as the personal minder of pop icon Rachel Marron (a good debut by singer Houston). when she is threatened by an obsessive fan. Lawrence Kasdan's script is a complete mess from beginning to end. and the film as a whole is a piece of Hollywood excrement sugared by a topping of romance and chart songs. Avoid. General release.

I Bram Stoker's Dracula (18) (Francis Ford Coppola. US. 1992) Gary ()ldman. Winona Ryder. Anthony Hopkins. 128 tttins. More gothic love story than out-and-out horror. C oppola's version is not the strict Stoker adaptation that many had hoped for. but is a visual feast nonetheless. Oldman taps his own dark. sexy. stomty self to create a powerful but sympathetic monster. while the rest of the cast range from the ineffectual to the overbearing. A rich and substantial vampire movie for our times. General release.

I Cape Fear ()8) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1991) Robert De Niro. Nick Nolte. Jessica Lange. Juliette Lewis. 127 mins. Scorsese's stunning remake of the 1962 original leaves Silence aft/re Lambs pallid by comparison. De Niro is terrifying as white trash psycho Max (‘ady. out of prison and stalking the family of the lawyer who suppressed evidence to put him away. Disturbing sexual undertones. ccntring on 15- year-old Danny (Lewis). make this an even ntore uncomfortable. but unmissable. top-notch scare- fest. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.

I Carmen (Francesco Rossi. Italy/France. 1984) Julia Migenes-Johnson. Placido Domingo. Ruggiero Raimondi. 152 mins. Beautifully visual and excellently performed film record of Bizet's classic operatic tale. in which two men are bewitched and destroyed by a dangerously sensual gypsy woman. Edinburgh: FilthUse. I CMIIII ( 12) (Richard Attenborough. UK/US. 1992) Roben Downey Jr. Moira Kelly. Geraldine Chaplin. 144 mins. Attenborough's craftsmanlike biopic of the cane-twirling celluloid clown skims ntost surfaces. but there are rewards to be found in the acting department. Cameos are uniformly good. but Downey towers above them all. The mass youth market may not give a toss who the Little Tramp was. but the lead helps make this a much more approachable prospect for regular movie-gocr than you‘d expect. Strathclyde: Cannon.

I City Of Joy ( 15) (Roland Joffe. UK/France. 1992) Patrick Swayze. Pauline Collins. Om Puri. 135 mins. Surgeon Patrick Swayze agrees to help Pauline Collins run a school and tttedical dispensary in the poorest area of Calcutta. but is intimidated by the local gang chief. Roland (Killing Fields) Joffe's latest offering is another attempt to create a feelgood epic front a situation of incalculable suffering. but despite being well ntade and acted. its didacticisttt smothers arty ability to respond. I Dead Poets Society (PG) (Peter Weir. l'S. 1989) Robin Williams. Robert Sean Leottard. Ethan Hawke. 129 rttitts. lit a staid private boys' school in 50s New England. art unconventional teacher (Williams) interests his charges itt literature and philosophy to such art extent that they fomt a secret club to investigate them (along with booze and girls) further. Though Williams is on good fornt. the film focuses mainly on the boys' emotional deveiopntent. Strathclyde: L'CI East Kilbride.

The Vietnam war has the effect of disrupting the lives of a small steel town. as various friends go off to face the horrors of war and return with emotional scars. A darittg triptych structure. the first part of which displays a rare sympathy for the traditions and rituals of the emigrant community. Fife; New Picture House.

In a sepia wasteland sontewhcrc itt the future. a butcher feeds his neighbours with the juicy joints of his lodgers. But when fontter clown Louison (Pinon) arrives and falls for his daughter. art underground vegetarian resistance group conte to the rescue. Hilarious blend of bizarre characters. slapstick attd comic tension makes for the first true cult item of the ‘90s. Strathclyde: Motherwell.

I Drugstore Cowboy ( 18) Kim Van Sant Jr.. US. 1989) Matt Dillon. Kelly Lyttch. Jantes Remar. Williattt S. Burroughs. 100 rttins. A gartg of dope fiends. headed by our Matt. blithely rip off a series of drugstores in Gus Van Sant‘s recreation of 1971 Oregon. Cotttplete with its halucittatory visions of flying cows. the film created a stir stateside for presenting the theft and use of narcotics as an alluring pastitne. It marks a new and ntore creditable milestone in Hollywood drug movies. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

One of the cinema‘s tttost extravagantly enjoyable productions. this gorgeous elephantine wallow of a film is cratttttted with incident and cotttpellingly curious Gallic comic characters. Despite touching a few raw nerves ott honte territory. the films uses its 'bascd on a true story' captiott as the excuse for all manner of unbelievable coittcidences and laughable situations. A waitress mother attd her two ' teenage daughters suffer fantin upsets while being continually chantted artd disappointed by the ttten in their lives. A world away from the typical Hollywood attetttpt to make a women's issues movie. Anders debut is as full of humour as it is itttegrity. with characters who have a resonance far beyond their screen lives. ('etttral: MacRobert. Fife: Adattt Smith.

I Clengarry Glen Boss ( 15) (James Foley. LS. 1992) Al Pacino. Jack Letttmon. lid Harris. Alan Arkin. I()() rttitts. The combination of Foley's camera attd Mamet's dialogue makes for verbal choreography in this hard-hitting. word-heavy account of the bondittg arid back-stabbing itt a ITS real estate office. The cast are magnificent. Pacitto and Letttttton outstanding. l'nderrated director Foley does wonders to break out of the stageplay format. Not easy going. but an unforgetable achievement.
