I Aklra (12) (Otomo Katsuhiro. Japan. 1989) Animated by Nakamura Takashi. with the voice" of Iwata Mitsue. Sasaki Nozomu. Koyama Mami. Ishida Taro. 124 mins. Based on the multi-volume graphic novel by Otomo. Akiru is a mythical. futuristic tale of post-holocaust Tokyo. where pill-popping biker kids begin to unearth a govemment project designed to exploi the psychic and telekinetic powers of a group of laboratory-bound children. Superny anitnatcd. with a fantastic visual and narrative imagination but you‘d be well advised to know something of the plot before you see it. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I L88 mm dtt Pout-loot ( 18) (Leos Carax. France. 1991) Juliette Binoche. Denis Lavant. 127 mins. An artist with a degenerative eye disease meets a fire~eating down-and-out. and they fall in love against the backdrop of Paris's Pont-Neuf. A stunningly visual movie. the most expensive ever to come out of France. Edinburgh: Cameo. Central: MacRobert. I Au Revolr les infants (PG) (Louis Malle. France/W. Gemtany. 1987) Gaspard Manesse. Raphael Fejito. Philippe Morier-Genoud. 1 13 mins. Low-key. ('inemu-i'erite influenced portrayal of incidents from Malle‘s own boyhood. Set during the German occupation. the film follows the developing friendship between two boys at a small school run by monks. one of whose secret Jewish identity proves dangerous t( both boys as the Nazi presence looms. Simple. subtle. and very moving film. which avoids the cliches of the coming-of-age genre. and makes its larger political points firmly but unobtrusively. Glasgow: GFT.
I Autobtrs (15) (Eric Rochant. France. 1991) Yvan Attal. Kristen Scott-Thomas. Marc Bennan. 95 mins. A young man (Attal) hijacks a school bus in order to visit the woman I‘: fell in love with while on holiday. On one level. Rochant's follow-up to A World Without Pity is an accessible and exciting heist picture done in a fairly Hollywood manner; on another. it manages to create genuine audience sympathy for its gun- toting protagonist. I Bad Lieutenant ( 18) (Abel Fen'ara. US. 1992) Harvey Keitel. Anthony Ruggiero. Peggy Gormley. 96 mins. A return to urban sleaze by master of the genre Abel Ferrara. A NYPD cop (Keitel). in debt due to drugs. alcohol and gambling addiction. is intrigued by a big money reward in the case of a raped nun. Harsh. powerful. but filled with a religious orthodoxy. this is a reminder of the director at his best (Angel of Vengeance. Driller Killer) and should be picked up by Resen-oir Dogs fans. I The Barkley: of Broadway (ll) (Charles Walters. US. 1949) Fred Astaire. Ginger Rogers. ()scar Levant. 109 mins. Fred and Ginger teamed up ten years after their lasting outing together when Judy Garland dropped out. and the result is a pretty tired story of the domestic difficulties of a dancing couple when she fancies a straight acting career. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I M Lyndon (15) (Stanley Kubrick. UK. 1975) Ryan O'Neal. Marisa Berenson. Patrick Magee. 184 mins. Kubrick's sumptuous recreation of Thackeray‘s shaggy dog tale follows O‘Neal‘s gentleman of fortune through 18th century Ireland. An extraordinary attention to detail and a visual style that effectively reproduces the look of contemporary paintings are the major points of interest. easily outweighing the meandering narrative thread. but this is a gorgeous film all the same. I and the Beast (U) (Gary Trousedale/Kirk Wise. US. 1991 ) With the voices of Paige O'Hara. Robby Benson. Richard White. 84 mins. The first animated film ever to get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. the 30th Walt Disney feature-length cartoon is a classic by anyone‘s standards. The familiar story is supplemented by terrific songs. a host of
comic characters and a breathtaking combination.

I "to II. Blue ( l5) (Luc Besson. France. 1988) Rosanna Arquette. Jean-Marc Barr. Jean Reno.
120 mins. Barr and Reno. friends since they were children. are divers competing to reach the greatest depths without the aid of breathing equipment. and also rivals for the romantic attentions of Ms Arquette. A commercial smash in its native France. Besson‘s film is a stunningly photographed visual experience in varying shades of blue. Even if the plot is a load of tosh. the dolphins are nice. Fife: New Picture House. I 310‘. RIM Th0 OW W (15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1982/92) Harrison Ford. Sean Young. Rutger Hauer. 1 16 mins. Out go the pseudo-noir narration and the tacked—on happy ending; in
, comes a more defined sense that Deckard
himself may be a replicant. The look and feel remain as powerful. and the acting is superb. A flawed masterpiece is now a restored masterpiece. Glasgow: GFT. Grosvenor. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Strathclyde: UCI East Kilbride.
I Tb. WM (15) (Mick Jackson. US. 1992) Kevin Costner. Whitney Houston. Gary Kemp. 130 mins. Costner tries dubious tough guy mode as the personal minder of pop icon Rachel Marron (a good debut by singer Houston). when she is threatened by an obsessive fan. Lawrence Kasdan's script is a complete mess from beginning to end. and the film as a whole is a piece of Hollywood excrement sugared by a topping of romance and chart songs. Avoid. General release.
I If. Stoker's M81! (18) (Francis Ford Coppola. US. 1992) Gary Oldman. Winona Ryder. Anthony Hopkins. 128 mins. More gothic love story than out-and-out horror. Coppola‘s version is not the strict Stoker adaptation that many had hoped for. but is a visual feast nonetheless. Oldman taps his own dark. sexy. stormy self to create a powerful but sympathetic monster. while the rest of the cast range from the ineffectual to the overbearing. A rich and substantial vampire movie for our times. General release.
I Cabin II the Sky (PG) (Vincente Minnelli. US. 1943) Eddie Anderson. Lena Horne. Louis Armstrong. 99 mins. Its political correctness or incorrectness aside. MGM‘s all-black musical wins you over with its gorgeous design. fun story. memorable songs and enthusiastic cast. Anderson is great as an idle husband. reformed by a dream of his death. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I C”. F08 ( 18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1991) Robert De Niro. Nick Nolte. Jessica Lange. Juliette Lewis. 127 mins. Scorsese‘s stunning remake of the 1962 original leaves Silence of the Lambs pallid by comparison. De Niro is terrifying as white trash psycho Max Cady. out of prison and stalking the family of the lawyer who suppressed evidence to put him away. Disturbing sexual undertones. centring on 15- year-old Danny (Lewis). make this an even more uncomfortable. but unmissable. top-notch scare- fest. Glasgow: GET.
I Chill (12) (Richard Attenborough. UK/US. 1992) Robert Downey Jr. Moira Kelly. Geraldine Chaplin. 144 mins. Attenborough's craftsmanlike biopic of the cane-twirling celluloid clown skims most surfaces. but there are rewards to be found in the acting department. Cameos are uniformly good. but Downey towers above them all. The mass youth market may not give a toss who the Little Tramp was. but the lead helps make this a much more approachable prospect for regular movie-goer than you‘d expect. Glasgow: ()deon. I W (18) (Louis Malle. UK/France. 1992) Jeremy Irons. Juliette Binoche. Miranda Richardson. Rupert Graves. 1 1 1 mins. A Tory MP. headed for high office. drops his parliamentary briefs in favour of his son‘s new girlfriend. David Hare's script is restrained and dispassionate. leaving the audience detached from the potential melodrama. A very English sexual repression pulled apart by French master Malle. See preview. and so are able to carry their mutual jealousy to outrageous extremes. A comedy that is surprisingly black. given the stars involved and the pressures on its $40 million budget. but which tends to get carried away with its distractineg impressive special effects.
