Beatrice Colin tries out the latest board games on offer.

It’s that family fun time ofyear again. The time when everybody falls out over a game of Scrabble or trying to understand the rules of Diplomacy. But for the brave. the witless or the just plain sad. a whole plethora of games have splurged on to the High Street in the last few years, some good. some in extremely bad taste and some a waste of cardboard. It‘s a jungle out there but you can’t tell what it‘s like until you‘ve tried it. so here are five games. tried. tested and won (or lost).

I Outburst Parker Games. £24.99. Ever endured Family Fortunes"? Well this is a bit like it. Two teams battle their way round a board by trying to name as many things as they can in certain categories. There are over 500 category cards and you slip each card into a special plastic case which enables the opposing team to see ten correct answers. Some are easy: James Bond Films. Birds; some difficult: Wild West Heroes. and some just obscure like Parts Of A Refrigerator. Much more fun than the TV show. this is easy to grasp and the more enthusiastic people are. the better.

I Mid-lite Crisis B.V. Leisure. £12.99. Aimed at professional thirty-somethings. the currency of this game is stress. money and divorce points. Sub-monopoly style. you whizz around the board. starting in your thirties and ending either

dead or in your sixties. No skill. high snooze factor. you‘ll find a better game on the back of a selection box. I Comings and Goings Gibson Games. £7.99. Representing a ‘Paternoster‘ lift where nine open lifts move in an endless chain. nine cards are laid out to show different people inside. The cards are then turned over and each player has to match their cards with the people on the cards on the table. A very simple principle but there is a catch. Each time a card is turned over it is moved. Horrendously difficult and not especially thrilling.

I Enigma Drummond Park. £26.99 This looks classy. The box is hexagonal and the graphics sombre and cerebral. The principle of the game. however is simple. Players navigate a maze and jump walls by solving a riddle. There are hundreds of riddles. easy and impossible. and the opposite teams can give a clue if the player is struggling. Not bad although some of the rhymes seem to have been thought up by some one who has taken one too many mind-altering drugs.

I Dare Parker (iames. £16799 A game ofpackaged joviality. Players scoot round the dayglo-coloured board answering extremely easy questions. lfyou get them wrong. a dare must be performed. In office-party mentality style. the dares are actions like go-go dance. stand on one leg for Oil secs or. kiss the head ofthe nearest bald man. Is humiliation amusing? Bafflingly banal.
