Alan Jones from Music Week reviews this week’s Bacardi Beat Dance Chart.
The small Midlands town of Stafford is unhappily placed between the Potteries and the Black Country, and has previously offered little evidence of musical talent, but it is home to two currently hot acts — Bizarre Inc and Altern 8. The former recently had a major club hit with ‘I’m Gonna Get You’, and now it’s Altern 8’s turn with ‘Brutal-B-E’, an oddly titled but naggingly familiar and hypnotic groove based heavily on flitro Deluxe’s seminal 1987 monster ‘Thls Brutal House’. It is thus their most accessible record to date and seems sure to give them another hit of some magnitude.
Yet another in the seemingly endless avalanche of cover versions, East Side Beat’s sparkling overhaul of Simple Minds’s ‘Allve & Kicking’ is likely to emulate the success of their bit version of ‘Blde Like The Wind’. It has the same strong vocal and scatting Hammond organ, neatly set against a stomping pop/house backdrop — and even the coolest clubbers can get away with making a bee-line for the dance floor with the Ken Wood dub mix.
Glasgow’s Limbo is establishing itself as one of the DK’s more interesting labels, and Its latest release, the oddly titled ‘Bup Bup Blrl Biri’ by Deep Piece, is well up to the usual standard. Compulsive progressive house groove, getting solid support from Ms, it won’t be a pop hit, though it did debut impressiver at number 18 on Music Week’s dance singles chart.
And talking of sales, the number one single of 1992 in the UK thus far is Snap’s ‘Bhythm Is A Dancer’. Their long-delayed follow-up, ‘Exterminate’, is already circulating to a priveledged few, it’s a worthy successor to their haunting hit, a synth heavy but hugely commercial example of European pop dance at its best
Finally, something completely different but utterly compelling in an ambient kinda way is Deep Forest’s ‘Sweet Lullaby’. The record combines a French classical pianist and pygmles from the Cameroon chanting over a lush and relaxing swathe of synth sounds, the whole fiendish confection being created in Belgium. It’s already a hit on the Continent, and could just take off here. Dance music for Enya fans, and what’s wrong with that?
