SIGHT AND SOUND

These days, Edinburgh’s Cockbur Street has a pleasing symmetry.

' Several doors down from the ' slickly-packaged CDs in Pop, The

Collective Gallery is festooned with, well, limited-edition compact disc

' cases. 0ver350 artists, musicians and

writers have turned the transparent

boxes into conceptual shrines. The

exhibition ends with an auction on

Saturday19.

It works even betterthan last year’s postcard derby. Neat and uniform, the CD is a handy symbol of the clinical, murderous advance of technology.

' After all, behind the CD revolution lies

the corpse of the good ole 12‘ vinyl. With deft imagination, the artists infiltrate the conquering gizmo and wreak havoc from within.

Sometimes the case is scarcely discernible. William Brotherston’s is bathed in molten lead and placed on a pedestal. Another is coated with melted wax and fixed with a wax-covered red light bulb. Several artists beat the nostalgia drum by featuring fragments of vinyl. Smeared with red paint, Harry Cohen's case

spills out a mangled record and cassette tape.

There is also some good brushwork. Linda Kirkham enlivens her beachside watercolour by inserting sand and shells into the box. Ros Sudron paints a delightful poke atthe ‘world in your hand' notion of technology: curly-necked, long-faced woman cradles globe in palm. Douglas Gray lays on a mad-looking man biting a filofax and even Donnie Munro chips in

with a beguiling bit of quasi-cubism.

Text is often used for added punch. Richard Easson sticks a cheery Christmas stamp on the corner of an envelope addressed to the dole office. Alongside a watercolour of an arrow pointing at David's wee penis, the caption runs: ‘Favourite Football lnjuries- Michelangelo’s Groin Strain'.

3 A few paces from Leslie Hill’s sternly ' typed assault on sex discrimination,

George Mackay Brown slips in a handwritten Nativity Song.

A bright and lively exhibition. Go CD it. (Carl Honoré)
