Brothers In Arms as the nation‘s essential coffee table accessory. But how to fit the ambience of the cocktail party orthe sound of the in-car stereo system into challenging arena format?

Testosterone levels may be flagging on the last of Faith No More‘s i unprecedented (notebooks out, Guinness 3 Book ofRecords compilers) four nights at Barrowland but if they‘ve not already been mistaken for part of the furniture an unflinching diet of driving funk rock will be the order of the evening. L7 flaunt similarly direct tactics taking their rock back to muscular basics.

Cleaving to traditional live ethics and the obvious boon ofwn'ting winning melodies has helped Sunscreem hoist themselves above a welter oflesser hippyish dance acts. In their hit singles ‘Love U More‘ and ‘Perfect Motion' they have popular set signposts and in Lucia ilolm a charismatic vocalist.

Huggy Bear are two guys and three gals (hey, just like Five Star!) witha pretty rudimentary grasp of the dynamics of a good choon, but who, probably more importantly, have taken out a lifetime subscription with the largely US-bascd Riot Grrrl movement which admirably urges women to down aprons and pick up guitars, with musical aptitude something of an afterthought.

A massive bill aiming to raise money for Africa-linked charities includes the steaming brew of reggae, soul. rock and African pop that is Makossa, hard rap crew Zulu Syndicate, the South African Student Choir, R.A.I.D., an event ominously trailed as ‘karaoke by Otis‘, an African fashion show, performance poet Kumo Rocks and DJs from the Snipe club. Craft stalls will be there for perusal too, and the whole event is brought to us by EU. African Society and the Pan African Centre.
I Roy Harper Queen‘s Hall, South Clerk Street, 668 2019. After receiving favourable notices for his new album Death 0r Glory, one of British rock’s favourite cult figures (yes, and good chum of Led Zep and Pink Floyd) bares his soul live on stage in Edinburgh.
I Dear Heights Cajun Aces and The Diesel Kings Subway, Cowgate, 225 6766. 10pm. £1 .50—£2. Scotland’s cajun kings supported by a five-piece of enviable musical ability playing mainly acoustic pop which is by turns sprightly and reflective. And has folky leanings, but not to the exclusion of other influences.

Be ahead of all the other kids at school and get your ticket now. Strangely enough, the currently lauded Denim are to be heard extolling the virtues of the era that first saw Status Quo assume the sound from which they have refused to depart since.

Continuing their unwitting quest to provide an anatomy of the teenage years, using only their sharpened guitars and flailing fringes, Neds have bypassed the wide-eyed wonderment of early adolescence to reach the sceptical and bitter stage. Next album will probably see them become jaded lotharios. Edinburgh’s trusty axe-wielders of a Husker Du persuasion The J oyriders won the demo scramble to secure that

The place to shape up for some pre-season festive footstomping with The Humpst ebullient cajun and country set, as showcased in its relative diversity on their debut album Mothers.

Philip may have ousted him on the West End stage, but out on his own on this Mission Of Love tour Jason will be seeking to consolidate his status as the discerning underwear- thrower‘s choice. And when the best this country can offer by way of competition is the hopelessly limp Take That, he won‘t have to sweat blood to do it.

Despite Shane MacGowan‘s tentative rehabilitation at the hands of Nick Cave, it‘s long-standing member Spider Stacey who remains at the helm for this latest appearance. The Pogues‘ take on Celtic heritage is persistently greeted as a cause for celebration when they venture north of the border.

The Underpants you know about (or see Sat 5), The Dream Disciples re-activate the sights and sounds of gothdom but without the risible pomp. and F unburn play frenzied buzzpop with a disarming lack of professionalism.
