SPELLBOUND IN WONDERLAND
Faced with a simple but oiten iantastic story, a children’s book Illustrator can create almost anything. Children's books spin worlds and iire young imaginations, and the pictures make just as big an impression as the words. Forthree hundred years, nursery rhymes, lalry stories and talk tales have been printed with small illustrations, but it was only in the middle oi the last century that artists like Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane became iamous ior their work. -, ‘Once Upon a Time’ spans irom then 1 until the present and is a iascinating display oi a huge diversity oi styles, mediums and interpretations. Split into E iour parts, the sections include nursery i rhymes; the artist as author (with work by Beatrix Potter and Edward Lear); author and illustrator (with Quentin Blake’s Cinderella) and i re-interpretations (with three visions ol 1 Treasure Island, including one by 1 Ralph Steadman). i Some oi the most charming work is Potter’s live small sketches oi her pet rabbit, Benjamin Bunny, which is hung ‘ beside the llnlshed watercolour lor ‘The Tale oi Flopsy Bunny'. Elsewhere, interesting techniques like Charles Keeping’s ink washes and watercolour
