BACARDI BEAT
UPIATE
This issue’s review comes from Alan Jones of Music Week, the BACARDI Beat Chart compiler.
It was conceived as a promotional item to bring attention to Virgin’s excellent new ‘New Romantic Classics’ compilation, but Brothers In Rhythm’s remix of Heaven 17’s classic ‘Temptation’ has turned into a major club hit in its own right, and will be rush-released very soon. It's the sort oi remix that actually justifies the term - totally revolutionising the track. It starts with a lengthy instrumental intro, that recalls the Balearic Beat movement, with some refreshing and extremely fluid Spanish guitar picking a la Raul Orellana, moving into a tense house phase before Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory and guest vocalist Carol Kenyon put the icing on the cake. Catch it when you can.
Scotland’s very own Cicero returns with another strong sell-penned single entitled ‘Live iorToday’. It’s already getting a few plays in the clubs and can also be heard at your local cinema in the movie ‘The Crying Game’. It should be another hit for Cicero who shares billing on the record with Sylvia Mason-James. You‘ll probably recognise her when you see her, but won’t know why-that’s because she’s
one oi the Pet Shop Boys’ backing vocalists, and recently played Jimmy Nail’s toll on his number one hit ‘Ain’t No Doubt’.
Some oi the biggest club hits of the past few years have been by Black Box and C&C Music Factory. Both groups have at one time or another borrowed the larynx of the, er, slightly corpulenl Martha Wash. It’s her you hear singing ‘Gonna Make You Sweat’ and ‘Fantasy’, lor instance. Now, at long last, she has a record contract to call her own and her first solo outing is a storming house track entitled ‘Carry
Finally, the more commercial clubs will shortly be taking receipt of Kylie Minogue’s new single. Reputedly her last for PWL, it’s a straightforward cover of Kool And The Gang’s ‘Celebration'. Kylie is apparently deep in negotiation about a new record contract, and is most likely to defect to Warner Brothers. A little envious of some of the club mixes MCA have commissioned for her sister Dannii’s singles, she reckons that the likes of Steve Silk Hurley and Madonna’s buddy Shep Pettibone should be involved in mixing her discs in future, so ‘Celebration’ is probably her last out-and-out pop 12-incher.
BACARDI rum was first produced in 1862 by Don Facundo Bacardi and is still imported from the Caribbean.
