FIGHT THE FUMES
It's not every day that you’ll see Ally McCoist in a green strip, but the talks at FoE Scotland have persuaded the Rangers and Scotland striker to don a green mask to help them light air pollution. Green Mask day in Scotland is Thursday 8 October: the environmentally lrlendly version of red nose day, when people across the country will be doing silly things to draw attention to air pollution and raise some money to boot.
Children are most vulnerable to air pollution, as recent statistics on childhood asthma have shown, so many of the activities around Fight the Fumes Week will be geared towards them. Already schools are organising green mask discos and treasure hunts, while in some schools teachers will be charged £10 to use the carpark. Grown ups at the Army Careers oitice will also be wearing masks. Statues all over Scotland have sprouted masks and in Ayr, the tashion has even spread to
scarecrows. All the fun and iundraising has a
serious side according to FoE Scotland’s Director Kevin Dunion. ‘We are trying to raise money to monitor Scotland’s school sites,’ he says. ‘These are the areas that are most vulnerable, because kids spend an hour on one spot, which no pedestrian would everdo.’
The point at the Fight the Fumes campaign is not to glean every last detail about air pollution in Scotland. It Is to prove to the government that there is reasonable concern about pollution
and embarrass it into putting more money into monitoring and research.
Another project to benetit from the day will be a lay-person's guide on how to use existing environmental legislation on air pollution and polluters. Pollution registers have been set up across Scotland by local authorities, but with varying degrees of public access and success. The guide should help people to ensure that their local authority is up to scratch. (Thom Dibdin)
