A fairly stonking double-bill here. Two bands from the Bellshill Talent Pool, both of which have had their debut LPs released recently, both of which know how to treat two guitars, bass, drums.

I 0i Polloi, Swine Flu and Bub The Buddha Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341 . 9pm. Poonk night at the Darnley, by popular request. SUNDAY 4 . Glasgow

I The Stranglers Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £10 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. A leap in venue size back to the sort of places they filled with case when Hugh Cornwell was still vocalist. Difficult to predict how they‘ll be greeted, as most of the sane world seems to have consigned The Stranglers to the history books, but their following was among the most loyal you could find a while back, so maybe they‘re as tenacious as ever.

I Glrlschool and Dunderlunit KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £5. After L7, this lot are going to look like some sort of Spinal Tap joke, but who could forget their seminal work with Motorhead . . . what was itcalled again? So potentially awful, that it might just be worth going to, and there‘s always Dunderfunk to cheer things up with their funk metal and winning humour.

I The James Taylor Duanet Tramway,

James Taylor Ouart

Albert Drive. 10.30pm. £7.5()(£5). Tickets from the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs, 227 5511. Dig out your dancing shoes for this one, as those acid jazz stalwarts show the youth of today how to use 3 Hammond effectively. For an instrumental band, they can have an enormous hold over their audience. Sponsored by Bacardi Gold.

TUESDAY 6 Glasgow

I Bad Manners Cathouse, Brown Street, 248 6606. 8pm. £7. Fifteen Top 30 singles in fourteen years as a band is not bad going, so call Bad Manners ‘washed-up' at your peril. especially when there‘s a new album, Nearly Essex, to come and Doug ‘nicest man in pOp‘ Trendle is involved. No man who now owns the home ofhis boyhood heroes (Bluebeat Records) can be written offlightly.

I New Fast Automatic Dartodiis King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £5. Rescheduled from late August. Back and biting with an insidious rhythmic monster ‘It‘s Not What You Know', all Joy Division basslines and upfront percussion. New FADs are proving they can still do their jagged indie funk thing and still sound fresh and distinctive.

I Glasgow Songwriters featuring Tom Cushley Biackfriars, Bell Street, 552 5924. 9.30pm. Free. Plus open platform.

Edinburgh

I Crosby, Stills And Nash Playhouse Theatre, Greenside Place, 557 2590. 7.30pm. £13, £1 1. lfyou’ve ever read any science fiction stories about the past. present and future all leaking into each other and getting jumbled up, you‘ll have got a strange feeling of déjd vu when this gig was announced. Another old group into whom a new generation has been initiated by a TV commercial (‘Our House‘ on a building society ad). Beautiful harmonies though, and it‘s an acoustic concert.

I Suede Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. See feature.

WEDNESDAY 7 Glasgow

I Paul Weller Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £9.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Seems that Paul Weller can do no right now in some people‘s eyes, just because he‘s not nineteen and angry anymore, and because he betrays his influences so unashamedly now. His eponymous debut solo album divides its time between beingjazzy. funky and groovy.

I The Dilrians The Dunny, The Bogle Stone, Giassford Street, 553 1638. 8pm. Dance rhythms allied to more traditional pop arrangements.

THURSDAY 8 Glasgow

I EMF Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £7.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. Under-18$ admitted, even though EMF don‘t seem that comfortable with the teeny mantle. They‘ve been in a constant state offiux since they made their debut splash. This week’s obsession is industrial metal and with the patronage of the likes ofJim ‘Foetus‘ Thirlwell, they‘re succeeding in coming across like a softer, more digestible version of Ministry.

I Keziah Jones and Balance KingTut‘s Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street, 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Singer/songwriter who blends soul and funk elements.
