Edinburgh’s Princes Street, having just shaken oh the tourists who crammed in iorthe Festival, is about to put on an amazing show tor the citizens themselves. The snappin-named Standard Liie Princes Street International Mile races will take place on Sunday 13 September, and have attracted some oi the world’s finest athletes.
All races begin on Manor Place and finish in tront oi the Waverley Centre. Race director John Anderson wants spectators to enjoy the spectacle, but warns against any hopes at world records. ‘The wind’s a major iactor- Edinburgh’s iamous ior its blustery easterly wind,’ he says. ‘And there are some gradients on the route.’ However, should Princes Street produce one at its westerly tornados, we could see a world’s best that will never be broken.
Forthat to be the case, oi course, you need top class athletes at the peak at their iorm, and that is certainly evident at this meeting. The men’s race is outstanding with Olympic champion Fermin Cacho pitted against world record holder Steve Cram, who is returning to something like his best iorm. There are also the explosively talented Kenyans, David Kibet and Joseph Chesire.
It anything, the women’s race is oi even higher quality, teaturing world champion Hassiba Boulmerka, new
Olympic champion Ellie Van Langen and iormer Olympic champions Doina Melinte, Tatyana Dorovskikh and Yelena Romanova. Musselburgh’s Yvonne Murray will also be competing, and will be looking to re-establish herselt alter a disappointing Olympics.
Also featured on the day will be a spectacularwheel-chair race, in which you can expect the athletes to cover the course up to halt a minute taster than the runners, and a veterans race which includes BBC commentator (and still the second fastest 5000 metres runner in history) David Moorcrott and tormer mile world record holder, Sydney Maree.
