I Light Sleeper(15) (Paul Schrader. US. 1991) Willem Dafoe. Susan Sarandon. Dana Delany. Mary Beth Hurt. 103 mins. Writer/director Schrader returns to terrific form with this tale of a drug courier searching for meaning in a broken urban world. Dafoe is superb as John Le Tour. a latterday cousin to Schrader's creations in American Gigolo and Taxi Driver. Tough and intense. it is the most involving film from this major American filmmaker for quite some time. Glasgow: GF'T.
I thtle Men Tate (PG) (Jodie Foster. US. 1991) Jodie Foster. Dianne Wiest. Adam Hann-Byrd. Harry Connick Jr. 99 mins. Seven-year-old Fred Tate is ostracised by his schoolmates and generally misunderstood due to the fact that he is a child genius. While succeeding in engaging both adults and children in the audience. Foster‘s directorial debut suffers from thematically one-sided characters — psychologist Wiest is purely academic growth. Foster (asthe working-class mum) purelyemotional. But Hann-Byrd as the kid is superb. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Love In The Time 01 Mysterm 18 i ( Alfonso Cuaron. Mexico. 1991) Daniel Gimenez. Claudia Ramirez. Luis de Icaza. 94 mins. A modern day Don Juan gets caught up in what would be a typical sex farce situation if director Cuaron hadn‘t given it a safe sex spin. Its treatment of HIV issues is poised between bad taste and praiseworthy comic invention. Glasgow: GF'I”.

In Franco‘s Spain of the mid-50s. a young man completes his military service and plans to wed his fiance. While looking for mu k. he shares a flat with a glamorous older woman (Abril ) who offers him more than a roof over his head. Abril carries the movie. which has a straight melodrama plotline that Almodovar would have camped up to high heaven. but it's still a treat of truly trashy proportions. See review. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Mad Max ( 18) (George Miller. Australia. 1979) Mel Gibson. Joanne Samuel. Steve Bislcy. 93 mins. In a bleak. near future the forces of law and order are barely able to suppress a reckless bedlam rampaging on the highways of the state. plenty grotesque imagery and vicious villians. Pure cinema (count the number of words ol' Max has to say) and the highpoint of the series. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I My Cousin Vinny (15) (Jonathan Lynn. US. 1992) Joe Pesci. Marisa Tomei. Fred Gwynne. 119 mins. Two New York students visiting the Deep South are charged with a murder they most certainly didn't commit. Enter rookie lawyer Vinny (iambini (Pesci). and it's a test of can-do Italian-American guile against the old-fashioned Southern gentility of Fred Gwynne's cunnudgeonly judge. A howlineg funny character comedy that at last lets Pesci carry a movie on his own. Thoroughly recommended. Glasgow: ()deon. Strathclyde: Magnum. All UCIs.
I Melted Lunch ( 18) (David Cronenbe rg. US. 1992) Peter Weller. Judy Davis. Ian llolm. Roy Scheider. 121 mins. I The Night 01 The Hunter (PG) (Charles Laughton. CS. 1955) Robert Mitchum. Shelley Winters. Lilian Gish. 93 mins. Mitchum is unforgettable in this atmospeheric talc (sadly Laughton's only film as director) in which he plays a psychotic priest chasing two children for the money stolen by their father. James Agee's script and Laughton‘s stark monochrome visuals mark out an allegorical conflict between good and evil but there's plenty haunting imagery to make this a mesmerising cinematic experience. Glasgow: GFI’.
I Night On Earth ( 15) (Jim Jarmuseh. US. 1992) Winona Ryder. Beatrice Dalle. Gena Rowlands. (iiancario Esposito. 129 mins. Los Angeles. New York. Paris. Rome. Helsinki. Five cities. fivetaxi rides. five chance encounters. The director of

I Noises Oil (15) (Peter Bogdanovich. US. 1992) Carol Burnett. Michael Caine. Christopher Reeve. 104 mins. A highly frantic farce about the backstage antics of a second-rate company performing a highly frantic farce. The Americanisation of Michael Frayn‘s West End comedy wears a little thin pretty soon. I The Phantom of Liberty ( 15) (Luis Bunuel. France. 1974) Monica Vitti. Michel Piccoli. Jean-Claude Brialy. 104 mins. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I The Player( 15) (Robert Altman. US. 1992)Tim Robbins. Greta Scacchi. Fred Ward. Peter Gallacher. 124 mins. Altman‘s satire on the wheeling and dealing of modern day llollywtmd is more than just an excuse for cincastes to play trainspotter with the famous faces in cameo roles. It is also a terrific thriller about a studioexec receiving death threats from a spurned writer. Tim Robbins is magnificent in the lead role. while Altman manages to grin as he bites the hand that feeds him. Easily the best movie of the year. ifnot ofthe decade so far. (ilasgow: ()deon.
