THERE’S A GUY LIVES IN NEVADA SWEARS HE’S
BUDDHA
I don't know what the title ol the show has to do with anything, perhaps it is an attempt to disguise the tact that this is a student revue. It this is the case then the cast shouldn’t worry too much about being unmasked because this is that rare thing: a GOOD student revue.
FESTIVAL
The sketches are slick, well-acted and, most importantly at all, relevant. There are jokes about the Mellor alialr the Olympics and Jason Donovan, as well as the usual twenty-somethings’ obsession with “His ephemera. Here are students who have an interest in the outside world and can say something amusing about it. (Frances Cornlord) There’s a guy lives in Nevada swears he's Buddha (Fringe) Durham Revue, Celtic Lodge (Venue 6) 225 7097, until 29 Aug (not Sun), 10.30pm, £3.50 (£3)
COMEDY FACTORY
I must confess. I thought that sketch-based comedy on the Fringe was the exclusive domain of harshly-potty-trained medics, following-in- the-Footlights Oxb ridge undergrads and Newsrevue.
Not so. Comedy Factory — at least five of whom are old enough to know better — are still churning out skits and songs satirising such popular targets of hatred as Masters of the Universe. suburban commuters, JFK conspiracy theorists and anti-smoking lobbyists.
Even more surprising is that the initially unappealing spectacle of six sweaty chaps in different-coloured T-shirts and mismatched suits proves, in the end, remarkably enjoyable. Yes, a few of the jokes fail to spark, and yes, David Mellor gags were hackneyed before the Fringe even began. But the slickness, verve and energy of the performers. and the strength of most of their material are more than enough to compensate. You‘d hardly

genteel. Sue Beard plays the piano and sings while Paul Sweatman, well what is it exactly that Paul Sweatman does?
This is a gentle. almost feeble show with nothing in it to shock the frail and elderly but nothing to really wake them up either. Beard is an accomplished singer and pianist but her frame of reference seems curiously antiquated. Her songs are about Surrey housewives. Tupperware parties and Roger Whittaker. Sweatman‘s jokes are about Nerys Hughes and Ralph McTeII. Altogether. the show would be more at home in a hotel piano bar than on the Fringe. (Frances Cornford)
