The Rockingbirds come tottering out of their London haven on a mission to convert this backward nation to the wonders of country music. Their eponymous debut album is doing no harm whatsoever in this department.

Sid Griffin may be remembered by fans of honest rootsy American guitar music as leading light in the once-vaunted Long Ryders. who pumped out a few cracking tunes in the mid-80s along with other part-country. part-garage Stateside favourites like Jason and the Scorchers. The Rain Parade and. oh yes. some crowd called REM.

They cover a lot of bases. though frustratingly don‘t always appear to be in too much ofa hurry to take the world by storm.
