Depardieu's indomitable hunchback struggles against impossible odds to make a success of his inherited farmland. unaware that his neighbours are plotting to drive him from his land. Beautifully photographed. with flawless performances. this is a towering tribute to the highest aspirations of French storytelling. A BAFTA winner for the film of the year. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I .1010: EIJIII (PG) (Francois Truffaut. France. 1961 ) Jeanne Moreau. Oskar Werner. Henri Serre. 105 mins. Truffaut's early masterpiece. telling the comi-tragic tale of an eternal triangle straddling the First World War. Bohemian. mercurial Parisienne Catherine (Moreau) divides her affections between Jules (Werner) and Jim (Serre). whose deep friendship overrides their rivalry in love and their separation by war. But Truffaut has a salutory fare in store for the threesome. which is both devastating and poetic. Powerful stuff. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I LIIIII Weapon 3 (15) (Richard Donner. US. 1992) Mel Gibson. Danny Glover, Joe Pesei. 118 mins. Gibson and Glover team up for the third time. going though the usual motions to track down a crooked real estate and narcotics boss. Dazzlineg original it is not. but the spectacular explosions. car chases. shoot-outs and comic relief from Pesci mean this one could run and run. See review. General release.
I Mam Du Sources (PG) (Claude Berri. France/Italy. 1986) Yves Montand. Daniel Auteuil. Emmanuelle Beart. 114 mins. Ten years after the demise of Jean de Florette. the Soubeyrans run a prosperous carnation farm. Steering this epic rural saga towards the realms of Greek tragedy. this is a full and satisfying second half that explores the suffering of the guilty asthey pay a crippling penance for man‘s greed and envy. The production values are as high as ever and Autcuil assumes Depardieu's mantle in his development from glaikit idiot to broken-hearted suitor. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Ilasala (18)(Srinivas Krishna. Canada. 1991) Srinivas Krishna. Sakina Jaffrey. Saeed Jaffrey. Zohra Segal. 106 mins. Bizarre. ironic and with a small whiff of blasphemy. writer-director-star Krishna‘s oddity has an ex~junkie orphan wandering about Canadian streets meeting. amongst others. a woman who talks to a Hindu god via her video recorder. My Beautiful Laundrette on acid. Glasgow: GFI‘.
I fly 0008"! mm (15) (Jonathan Lynn. US.1992) Joe Pesci. Marisa Tomei. Fred Gwynne. 119 mins. Two New York students visiting the Deep South are charged with a murder they most certainly didn‘t commit. Enter rookie lawyer Vinny Gambini ( Pesci). and it's a test of can-do Italian-American guile against the old-fashioned Southern gentility of Fred Gwynne‘s cunnudgeonly judge. A howlingly funny character comedy that at last lets Pesci carry a movie on his own. Thoroughly recommended. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. All UCIs.
I TM NM Boys (PG) (Kenny Ortega. US. 1992) Christian Bale. Robert Duvall. Ann-Margaret. 95
mins. Set in the New York of 1899. The News Boys
tells through song and dance the true story of the city‘s paperboys‘ successful strike against the profit-hungary press barons. It‘s all transfixingly awful. but curiously entertaining as a result. a sort of big screen Springtime For Hitler for a new generation. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. All UCIs.
I NIOIII On Earth (15) (Jim Jannusch. US. 1992) Winona Ryder. tBeatrice Dalle. Gena Rowlands. Giancarlo Esposito. 129 mins. Los Angeles. New York. Paris. Rome. Helsinki. Five cities. five taxi rides. five chance encounters. The director of Mystery Train and Down By Law pushes aside narrative and goes instead for visual uniformity in a claustrophobic setting. Character studies with a mildly philosophical aftertaste. Glasgow: GFT. Edinbugh: Cameo.
I Paellle HOIIMI ( 15) (John Schlesinger. US. 1990) Melanie Griffith. Matthew Modine. Michael Keaton. Tippi Hedren. 102 mins. Creepy suspense thriller with mildly Hitchcockian undertones has Griffith and Modine as a 10vey-dovey couple struggling to pay the mortgage on their desirable new Frisco home. Well acted and not without its moments. but rather slender in the plot department. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Mt P80 (U) (Hamilton Luske/Clyde Geronimi/Wilfred Jackson. US. 1953) Withthe voices of Bobby Driscoll. Kathryn Beaumont. Hans Conried. 76 mins. Disney version of the J.M. Barrie story flies through the air in a well-timed holiday release. Good enough for a cartoon. poor as a version of Barrie. Those who lauded it while condemning Spielberg‘s Hook may well have to eat their words. I suspect. Glasgow: Cannon The Forge. Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. All UCls.
I TN I'm (12) (Gillies Mackinnon. UK. 1992) Robin Wright. Aidan Quinn. Albert Finney. 108 mins. A young woman causes scandal in her small Irish village when she refuses to name the father of her newborn son; events only get
worse when a troupe of travelling actors pitches its tent and she falls for the leading man. Tenderly acted by a uniformly magnificent cast and handled with care by the Scottish director of acclaimed TV films The Grass Arena and Conquest of the South Pole. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I TI. Player(15) (Robert Altman. US. 1992)Tim Robbins. Greta Scacchi. Fred Ward. Peter Gallacher. 124 mins. Altman’s satire on the wheeling and dealing of modern day Hollywood is more than just an excuse for cineastes to play trainspotter with the famous faces in cameo roles. It is also a terrific thriller about a studio exec receiving death threats from a spurned writer. Tim Robbins is magnificent in the lead role. while Altman manages to grin as he bites the handthat feeds him. Easily the best movie of the year. ifnot of the decade so far. Glasgow: Odeon. Edinburgh: Odeon.
I lied Heat(18) (Walter Hill. US. 1988) Arnold Schwarzenegger. James Belushi. Ed O'Ross. 104 mins. Tough Moscow cop Arnie follows the trail of Moscow's most psychotic drug dealer to Chicago. where slobbish cop Belushi is assigned to co-operate with him on the case. They break the rules at every turn to bring the wrongdoer to justice, and thaw their mistrusts along the way. PrediCIable glasnost-era police buddy thriller with familiar banter and action set-pieces. This one does have a rather nifty bus chase sequence. though. Strathclyde: UC I East Kilbride.
I Sam and NI (PG) (Deepa Mehta. Canada. 1991 ) Ranjit Chowdhry. Peter Boretski. Heath Lamberts. 94 mins. A young Indian comes to Canada to look after a cantankerous old Jew and. as their friendship develops. family tensions begin to escalate. I Sleepwalker: (18) (Mick Garris. US. 1992) Brian Krause. Madchen Amick. Alice Krige. Jim Haynie. 91 mins. The first original screenplayby Stephen King concerns a pair ofitinerent. flesh-craving shapeshifters who are the last survivors of the ancient breed of Sleepwalkers. Shying away from exploring the material's dark desires. it concentrates instead on a slew of childish splatter setpieces. Makes a welter of bloodletting seem less threatening than a cat food commercial. Edinburgh: UCI. Strathclyde: Kelbume. UCI Clydebank. I TIM SMMN 090nm! Ljubavni Slucaj( 18) (Dusan Makaveyev. Yugoslavia. 1967) Eva Ras. Slobodan Aligrudic. Ruzica Sokic. 69 mins. The story of a telephonist who sets up home with a sanitary inspector. becomes pregnant and accidentally drowns. Characteristic Makavcyev brew of blunt sexual visions. dark humour and political comment. Glasgow: OH”. I Truly. Madly. Deeply (PG) (Anthony Minghella. UK. 1990) Juliet Stevenson. Alan Rickman. Bill Paterson. 103 mins. Nina. a young translator. thinks her life is falling apart when her loverdies. But when he returns. albeit with a cold and looking a little paler. she begins to question her previous notions of happiness. A wonderfully literate screenplay by first-time director Minghella and a faultless performance by Stevenson raise Truly. Madly. Deeply above the level of its American counterpart. Ghost. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Universal SOIIIIOt ( 18) (Roland Emmerich. US. 1992) Jean~Claude Van Damme. Dolph Lundgren. Ally Walker. 102 mins. Twosoldiers killed in Vietnam are cryogenically frozen. then turned into prototype versions ofthe Universal Soldier — an unstoppable fighting force of humanoid electronic warriors. But things begin to go awry and a deadly rivalry begins between the duo. causing a trail of destruction across America. Robocommando Recall might be a better name for it. but this wonderfully daft. sci-fi pulp actioner certainly bounces the mayhem off the gleeful humour. General release.
I Wayne's World (PG) (Penelope Spheeris. US. 1991) Mike Myers. Dana Carvey. Rob Lowe.Tia Carrere. 95 mins. Two heavy metal dorks hit the big time when their public access cable show is snapped up by a greedy TV exec for national primetime. Crammed full ofTV and film pastiches. this US phenomenon has far more hits than misses. while Wayne and Garth revel in an even wackier vocabulary than cinematic first cousins Bill and Ted. They‘ve shot. they‘ve scored! Glasgow: Cannon Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh: Cannon. Strathclyde: La Scala. All UCIs.
I V1.11. -Tho Mysteries ofthe Organism ( l8) (Dusan Makavejev. Yugoslavia. 1971) Milena Dravic. Jagoda Kaloper. Zoran Radmilovic. 86 mins. A liberated Yugoslav woman has an affair with a Russian skating star. The life and ideas of Wilhelm Reich (everyone needs better orgasms) are revealed in documentary footage. Make of the juxtaposition what you will. but the superimposition of Stalin on a plaster-cast penis doesn‘t really tell us anything new about the relationship between sex and politics. Glasgow:
