Liotta plays Henry Hill. a real-life mafioso. with De Niro as his mentor in crime. And while the bullets. fists and carving knives fly. Scorsese brings us back to that unavoidable question - yes. it's glamorous and lucrative to live this way. but can anyone really live with the consequences? Lehman‘s first feature film managesto combine box office success with artistic merit. Based looselyon the true life (and subsequently recanted) confessions of Henry Lee Lucas. McNaughton’s exemplary film is a harrowing account ofan amoral mass murderer. Scenes of rape and mutilation transcend the usual titillation of the genre and force the audience to question the use ofmurder as entertainment. Miguel Bose. Marisa Paredes. 115 mins. More melodramatic frolics from Spain‘s finest. this time in the shape ofa murderous triangle between a mother. her daughter and the latter‘s husband. While Almodovar isn‘t quite at his best. Abril excelsas the TV news presenter who admits on air to her hubby's killing. Glasgow: (EFT. I Homicide ( 15) (David Mamet. US. 1991)Joe Mantegna. William H. Macy. Natalija Nogulich. Rebbeca Pidgeon. 102 mins. Dedicated cop Bobby Gold (Mantegna) begins to struggle with his conscience and reflect on his Jewish background when a murder investigation puts him on the track of an anti-Semitic terrorist group and a counter-organisation of Zionist vigilantes. Mamet‘s third film is as much about faith in a lost society as racist tensions in New York. and is certainly head and shoulders above most conventional police procedurals. Glasgow: GF'T. I Honey I Shrunk The Kid: (U) (Joe Johnston. US. 1989) Rick Moranis. Matt Frewer. Thomas Brown. Amy O'Neill. Robert Oliveri. Jared Rushton. 92 mins. Hapless father and would-be inventor (Moranis) does just what the title suggests. The kids find themselves cut down to size (a quarter of an inch) and swept out with the trash. Their mission: to escape from the garbage bag and somehow attract their father‘s attention to their height problem. Well. we might think it’s old hat but Walt Disnae. Strathclyde: UCl East Kilbride. I HooIt(PG) (Steven Spielberg. US. 1991) Robin Williams. Dustin Hoffman. Julia Roberts. Bob Hoskins. 135 mins. The combination of Robin Williams. Steven Spielberg and Peter Pan proves to be as successful in practice as it appears in theory. if the film is watched in the proper childish frame of mind. The story of a grown-up Peter rediscovering his true identity allows for some

fortysomething pondering. but primarily it‘s an excuse for a magical journey around pirate ships. lost islands and colourful fights. Sure. it‘s formulaic: but Spielberg's ingredients are richer and more wonderfully cinematic than anyone else's. General release.
I Howard: End(PG) (James ivory. UK. 1992) Anthony Hopkins. Vanessa Redgrave. Helena Bonham Carter. Emma Thompson. 142 mins. After a succession of dreary Forster clones. the British film industry gets round to tackling his masterpiece. and one of the most important novels of the 20th century. The story. centringon the marriage between a wealthy and reactionary old duffer and an emancipated younger woman. is a complex family chronicle told with clarity and compassion. At last a cinematic period drama that exudes excellence. with some finely crafted performances to match. Glasgow: Salon. Edinburgh: Dominion.

Vietnam vet Jacob Singer is seeing some very strange things. like nurses with demons' horns and people with faces straight out ofa Francis Bacon painting. As his grip on the reality of his present life begins to slip. he has recurring flashbacks to the night his platoon was wiped out during the war. The director of Fatal A (traction and the writer of Ghost combine to pull off one of the most terrifying. yet ultimately moving. paranoia thrillers of recent years. Glasgow: Gl-‘T. I Jason and The Argonauts (U) (Don (‘haffeyu UK. 1964) Todd Armstrong. Nancy Kovack. Gary Raymond. 103 mins. Totally brill adventure yarn as our hero Jason sets out to retrieve the legendary golden fleece and is helped by a number ofthe gods an Olympus along the way. Ray Harryhausen‘s stop-motion effects remain among the best of his career. most notably the final conflict with an army ofskeletal soldiers. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Joan De Flotatto (PG) (Claude Berri. France. 1986) Gerard Depardieu. Yves Montand. Daniel Auteuil. 121 mins. Provence. during the 1920s. Depardieu‘s indomitable hunchback struggles against impossible odds to make a success ofhis inherited farmland. unaware that his neighbours are plotting todrive him from his land. Beautifully photographed. with flawless performances. this is a towering tribute to the highest aspirationsof French storytelling. A BAF'TA winner for the film ofthe year. I JFK (15) (Oliver Stone. US. 1991 ) Kevin Costner. Joe Pesci. Gary ()ldman. Tommy Lee Jones. 190 mins. Based on the controversial theories of New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison. Stone's epic account of what did or did not happen when President Kennedy made an untimely exit from this world makes for enthralling cinema. A fine performance by Costner is supported by one of the finest castsever assembled before the camera. Regardless of verity of his argument. this is Stone's most powerful effort to date.
