i Some of Scotland’s most exciting and
daring art is about to go on public view next week, even though most of us have yet to hear of the artists.
Art colleges around the country will
; open their doors for an annual student
showcase underlining the celebrated standards oi Scotland’s young artists. Diverse attractions range from
traditional techniques to multi-media
. and environmental art, though Jimmy 1 Robertson, head of painting at Glasgow
School of Art, suggests the trend is moving away from figurative work back to impressionistic and abstract designs.
‘There is a lot more mixed media, although there are a few very academic painters still around,’ he says. ‘Df course one finds the same people who have been coming for fifteen years don’t in fact alter their ideas, so in the absence oi still-lite and oils they think the college is going to the dogs.’
Glasgow, along with Dundee, has often led the rest of Britain in art
- "u‘ 9' \ '. S‘s-e practice, with an output that attracts international interest and numerous prizes. This year is no different, with Glasgow’s Emily Baaker already accepted by The Royal Academy. More recently, however, Edinburgh’s college of art has been making headway in graphics design under the direction of Maggie Gordon and Andrew Restall, pursuing a seven-year plan which has redirected the emphasis on the visual communications strand.
‘What we're doing is moving onto a conceptual basis so that students are dealing with lateral ratherthan literal thinking,’ says Maggie Gordon. ‘The printing process actually become the vehicle for ideas rather than the end product.’ (Aaron Ricklln)
