SCOTLAND

The Scots biggest advantage is that they cannot be humiliated. For the first time ever. Scotland enter a major tournament as recognisably the weakest side. and with a goalkeeper whose name doesn‘t make every impartial observer snigger in embarrassment. Strachan is missing but Scotland will presumably still play to the

y‘ traditional ginger-haired midget

strengths of harrying the opposition

= and committing completely

unnecessary ruthless fouls. Expect

heroic defeats. the outside possibility of an historic victory. and several yellow cards. The biggest

danger is that Paul McStay will begin to believe he is half as good as daft pundits claim.

Star potential: Pat Nevin. The man who spent much of the season on

. loan to Tranmere Rovers makes a ' fairytale return to the Scotland side.

The only way is up.

Amusing name: Gordon Durie. His nickname is (you‘ve guessed it) ‘Jukeboxi

Paul ‘Not that good' McStay

CIS

i Who they? The Commonwealth

of Independent States to you guvnor, and a last chance to see those USSR stars before they disappear into obscurity with Lithuania. Ukraine. Latvia and Glasgow Rangers. How much ofa team-spirit will exist is open to question. but most of this squad have been together since the last European Championships when they lost in the final to Holland. British viewers will be able to follow the form of Mikhailichenko (good). Kuznetsov (crap) and Kanchclskis (excellent).

Star potential: Sergei Yuran. Came out of nowhere to lead Benfica‘s European Cup campaign this season (ask an Arsenal fan).

Amusing name: Kakha Tskhadadze. Oh those Georgians!

l ,, ~ 3‘1,“ (. Andrei ‘Kan-Kan' Kanchelskis GERMANY

Boo hiss. the favourites. but are they the obvious winners? The Germans were unconvincing in Italia 90. fortunate to defeat England in the semi-final penalty shoot-out. and gifted a penalty in the terrible final against Argentina. Essentially they were dragged along by the genius of Lothar Matthaus and the left foot of Andreas Brehme. Matthaus is out. and the Germans could struggle without him. although Jurgen Klinsmann will be all-out to win some penalties with his tendency to drop to the ground clutching his leg as soon as he enters the penalty area. No one really wants this shower to win do they?

Star potential: Thomas Doll. An ‘Eastie‘ made good. Having beaten rumours that he was a ‘Stasi‘ informer. midfielder Doll will be Gazza’s teammate at Lazio next

_: season.poor bloke. f Amusing name: Stefan Kuntz. How

will Brian Moore handle this one‘.’
