Jane Jewell is a classically trained dancer who left London City Ballet for The Scottish Ballet, and now, five years on, has left them to pursue a freelance choreographic career. It was her year with Massimo Moricone of Koros Dance Theatre in Home that had the greatest effect on her and resulted in herwinning a distinction for reaching the final twelve in a prestigious Swiss competition.
Jewell qualifies ratherwell, then, for the Stamping Ground — a continuing series of national platforms for up-and-coming choreographers. Her new work, Sides, performed in a programme that includes Kirsten White’s solo Circumstantial, and ] Jackie Anderson’s duet entitled Two : Way Street, is based on the first part of | Anais tiin’s diaries and various Jackson Pollock paintings, including The Enchanted Forest. ‘I was drawn to Pollock's work at an exhibition in Venice,’ says Jewell, ‘because it’s very vibrant and very colourful.’
The setting for Sides, on the other hand, sounds like the opposite. ‘It
could be a room, it could be a cell,’ Jewell says about the space in the Centre for Contemporary Arts, ‘but what I tried to do with the very small venue is makethe venue itself the set, with its own real doors and stairways.’ Within this bleak-sounding place
lurks a static figure in a desolate mood with accompanying eerie overtones. ‘lt’s as if she’s locked within herself. . . as if memory brings everything to a stop. Maybe stasis is a form of being tense, not being able to function well. Then she tries to break out of that- that’s where the contrast is, where everything’s flowing and she's ready for adventure and action.’ Which brings us back to Pollock’s colourful vibrancy. Karen Wood took over the post of Director of the Edinburgh Dance Project in August 1991 , iust two months before the initial Edinburgh District/Scottish Arts Council residency was due to end. Since that time she has repeatedly saved the project from closure, winning new commitment from the

District Council and managing to make an original mark.
With her background as Artistic Director of the Aberdeen festival Dance Around, it is significant that Wood’s major contribution to the project has been a series of performance events, with the collective title of Touch Base, that have attracted capacity crowds to the Assembly Rooms.
As part of the Spring Fling Festival, Wood presents Celtic Crossings, an association of notable artists: French dancer Bruno Saious, Dubllner Paul
Johnson (ex-Dance Artist for Aberdeen), and Edinburgh’s own X-Factor. During the companies’ residencythere will be daily technique classes for advanced dancers, an open rehearsal where discussion and feed-back are welcomed, and a final performance.
With the Parliamo Europe theme of the 1992 Fling, this meeting of Celts is both innovative and appropriate. They are all inspired by the seminal American choreographer Alwin Nikolais. ‘Their backgrounds are similar,’ explains Wood, ‘buttheir individual work is different. What we are focusing on is the international exchange - a chance for the dancers to collaborate and, possibly, perform a group improvisation at the end of the week.’
Saious trained at the American Centre in Paris, working with Nikolais’s Imagination Dance Theatre and Bill T. Jones and Company. He will dance a solo. Mandance are the Irish group headed by Johnson, who will be presenting A Curious Misunderstanding, wittily exploring masculinity. And the X-Factor, fresh from their recent Mayfest success, will show Build-Up, a fragmented collage based on initiation, growth and dispersion. (Tamsin Grainger)
