Steven Spielberg and Peter Pan proves to be as successful in practice as it appears in theory. if the film is watched in the proper childish frame of mind. The story of a grown-up Peter rediscovering his true identity allows for some fortysomcthing pondering. but primarily it‘s an excuse for a magical journey around pirate ships. lost islands and colourful fights. Sure. it‘s formulaic; but Spielberg‘s ingredients are richer and more wonderfully cinematic than anyone else‘s. General release.

After a succession of dreary Forster clones. the British film industry gets round to tackling his masterpiece. and one of the most important novels of the 20th century. The story. centring on the marriage between a wealthy and reactionary old duffer and an emancipated younger woman. is a complex family chronicle told with clarity and compassion. Latest animated feature from Disney graduate Bluth follows the fortunes of orphaned Brontosaurus Littlefoot. who loses his mum to the claws of a nasty Tyrannosaurus Rex before teaming up with a gang ofsimilarly parentless wee dinos to undertake the hazardous journey across country to the safety of the Great Valley. Classically drawn and chockful ofedifying moral lessons. this is solid entertainment perfectly tailored to the demands of its target audience of very young children. Glasgow: GFI. IThe Last Boy Scout ( 18) (Tony Scott. US. 19911 Bruce Willis. Damon Wayans. Chelsea Field. 105 mins. Ill-matched buddy duo of scuzzball private eye (Willis) and disgraced sports idol (Wayans) biff. bang and crash their way through bone-crushing violence and producer Joel Silver‘s trademark explosions. State-of-the-art fluff. which works like a good dirty joke — shameful but kind of fun. Edinburgh: UCI. I The Lawnmower Man (15) (Brett Leonard. UK/US. 1992) Pierce Brosnan . Jeff Fahey. Jenny Wright. 108 mins. Backward gardener (Fahey) is the subject ofexperiments to increase learning potential using drugs and Virtual Reality technology. Cue weird side effects and telekinetic powers. Unfortunately the plot (which has hardly anything to do with the Stephen King short story) is little more than a ludicrous twist on the Frankenstein format and is basically just there as an excuse for some admittedly stunning. computer-animated special effects. See preview. General release. I Life I: Swee1(15) (Mike Leigh. UK. 1991 ) Alison Steadman. Jim Broadbent.Jane Horrocks. Claire Skinner. Timothy Spall. David Thewlis. 102 mins. Domestic cringe-drama which centres on a family with mismatched twin daughters (Horrocks and Skinner). an inefficient caterer dad (Broadbent) and a generous-spirited mum (Steadman). Like all Leigh's work. the drama is laced with a bleak. almost cruel humour.

Shakespeare's Henry IV Part: 1and2 are given a sleazy. contemporary twist in Van Sant‘s follow-up to the admirable Drugstore Cowboy. Screen heart-throbs Phoenix and Reeves make brave career moves by playing a rent boy and the preppie layabout object ofhis affections. but to good effect. A compelling. idiosyncratic. left-field gem. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Naked Gun (15) (David Zucker. US. 1988) Leslie Nielsen. Priscilla Presley. Ricardo Montalban. 85 mins. Nielsen plays a disaster-prone LA cop assigned to find the men who shot his colleague in a drugs bust. and protect our dear Queen at the same time. while also finding time for romance with secretary Presley. The makers ofAirpIane here operate on a similar principle: keep it fast. keep it marvellouslydumb. and the comic dividends will eventually flow. Edinburgh: Cameo.

Body horror maestro takeson the near impossible task of filming William Burroughs' controversial novel The Naked Lunch and comes out with a cinematic masterpiece. Elements from Burroughs‘ own life merge with a surreal narrative and the book's bizarre. drug-induced sexual imagery. leaving a bewildered. but impressed. audience in their wake. Winning combination of satirical parody and heartfelt tribute. as Scorsese tries his hand at big-budget musical comedy. The two stars are outstanding as a warring couple.
