Dozens in THE PLAYHOUSE . Leith Walk Edinburgh \5\ Still only £2.50 10pm-3.30am

The Ital Club at Liberty's in Edinburgh on the last Friday of every month began as far back as June 1976 as the Ital Sound System. Eventually the club established a three-year residency in the Playhouse Studios opening three nights a week and playing host to numerous British and Jamaican bands. With the departure of Papa Swi for London in 1984 after eight years of success, the ltal Club closed its doors.

Seven years later ltal re-opened in Liberty’s and continues to pursue its policy oi playing a wide selection of reggae music as well as a splash of soul, funk and calypso.

Here, Ital DJs pick ten tracks (the first four being new releases) to reflect the balance between new and vintage music that can be heard at the club.

1. China Black: Searching. A mid-paced slice of soulful British

reggae from a new outfit currently riding high in the (reggae) charts.

2. Freddy McGregor: To Be Poor Is A Crime. A timely message from one oi the evergreens oi Jamaican music. Listen up!

3. Chaka Demus And Pliers: Gal Wine. An infectious piece of combination (singer and deejay) style from the current brand leaders. User-friendly ragga.

4. Ken Boothe And Pure Silk: Be Thankful. A re-worklng ot the old William Bell tune from a highly successful twinning of the veteran Jamaican singer and top UK lovers rock band.

5. Frankie Paul: Sara. The inimitable Frankie at his peak. from the album of the same name. Sweet as a nut!

6. John Holt: Love l Can Feel. Vocals from a stalwart of reggae music over a timeless Studio One rhythm track, re-used time and again down the years. Classical reggae!

7. Mighty Diamonds: Right Time. From the legendary Channel One studios. vintage '76 rockers cut from the doyens ol reggae harmonies.

a. Bob Marley: Running Away. Any one of dozens could have been included. Bob’s lyrics float over a haunting melody. Musically brilliant.

9. Delroy Wilson: Living In The Footsteps (Df Another Man). Everlasting King Tubby’s production from ’75. Voiced by one of Jamaica’s finest crooners.

10. Bob Andy: Friends. Words of wisdom from reggae’s supreme lyricist - sadly overlooked in favour of more transient tastes.
