When long-lost Uncle Fester returns from 25 years in the Bermuda Triangle. it disrupts the idyllic lifestyle of the Addams clan. But is this Fester a fortune-grabbing imposter? Big budget movie has all of the macabre sense of fun of the TV series and the original New Yorker cartoons. as well assets and design that any self-respecting ghoulish household would die for. New settlers from outa space still face prejudice after several years on the planet (surprise!) Detective Caan is assigned extra-terrestrial partner Patinkin and as they erode the barriers between them. they discover a conspiracy that could threaten the whole alien nation. A laudable idea is marred by plotting of awesome predictability. resulting in a duff buddy movie with a high count of latex heads. Glasgow: Grosvenor.

A twelve-year-old girl searches for her African roots in the busy heart of London and discovers she is the reincarnation of an ancestral spirit. Despite being undeniably impressive in its freeforrn blending of myth and musical rhythm to create a unique narrative style. one can‘t help but think that, if all the black characters were white and vice versa. this would be branded as openly racist. Germany. where his task is to locate and motivate a killer without a track record. He finds his hired man in the innocent Ganz. but loses his sense of identity in the process. Stirring stuff. with all that eloquent desolation that typifies Wenders‘ work. Glasgow: GET.
I An Angel Al Hyrable (PG) (Jane Campion. New Zealand, 1990) Kerry Fox. Alexia Keogh. Karen Fergussson. 158 mins. A lengthy treatment of Janet Frame‘s autobiographical trilogy of novels. originally made for television. the film follows Frame‘s life from awkward childhood and teenage years. through university (where she was diagnosed as schizonphrenic) and bohemian travels in Europe. to her adult achievements as a writer. It offers a more subtle depiction of mental illness than the director's Sweetie. and is superbly conceived and acted throughout. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Rampling. 113 mins. Scruffy. unshaven private eye Harry Angel is hired by the mysterious Louis Cyphre to track down a missing Forties crooner who has reneged on a life-or-death deal. His investigations lead him to a seedy New Orleans dominated by voodoo cults and extremely dead bodies in this uncomfortable mating of visceral gore and moody film noir. with some ingenious if nasty twists in the plot. David Hemmings. 98 mins. 1n the year 40.000 AD. sex kitten Fonda travels to the planet Sorgo to divest herself of much futuristic clothing. fall in love with Law's angel and tussle with Hemmings‘ mad scientist character Duran Duran (yes. fact fans. it is he). Dated Vadim romp of interest mostly to kitsch aficionados or horny twelve year-olds. Glasgow: GFT.

When socially-committed playwright Barton Fink (Turturro) is consigned by the Hollywood machine to write wrestling films. he slumps into a writer‘s block as large as his mysterious next-door neighbour (John Goodman). Unprecedented winner of best film. actor and direction awards at 1991 ‘s Cannes Film Festival shows the Cocn‘s at their most menacing and absurd best. Strathclyde: Magnum.
I Basic instinct(18) (Paul Verhocven. US. 1992) Michael Douglas. Sharon Stone. George Dzundza. Jeanne Tripplehorn. 128 mins. On-the-edge ’Frisco cop Nick Curran (Douglas) becomes embroiled with a successful novelist and murder suspect (Stone); she. in turn. treats him to a series of psychological fomications while going along a similar path with his body. Easily the best. ice-pick-sharp thriller for several years. with steamy sex scenes that leave the screen dripping with sweat. General release.
I The Bear (PG) (Jean-Jacques Annaud. France. 1988) Bart. Douce. Jack Wallace. Tcheky Karyo. 98 mins. Simple. unsentimental narrative follows the experiences of two bears. a big adult kodiak and a young orphan cub. as they are pursued by two hunters. Cleverly filmed to capture the bears acting naturally. this insightful record oftheir point of view makes a moving plea for the decent treatment of all animals and is highly entertaining as it goes about it. Jaded painter Edouard Frenhofer (a tremendous performance from Piccoli) finds inspiration in a new model. the effects of which spill over to his private life. I Betty Blue: The Complete Version ( 18) (Jean-Jacques Beineix. France. 1986) Jean-Hugues Anglade. Beatrice Dalle. Gerard Darrnon. 180 mins. The story remains the same — boy meets girl. girl flips out — but the extra 60 mins of unseen footage is a mixed bag. Some new scenes help give a creditable timescale to Betty's descent into insanity. while others are distracting. the cinematic equivalent of monstrous carbuncles on the face ofa well-loved friend. Evil robot versions of that most excellent duo totally kill our heroes. causing them to take on the Grim Reaper at party games. make a quick visit to Heaven and eventually win the day. However. courtesy of a time-travelling telephone booth. the two dudes canter through the centuries on a breakneck refresher course where they meet up with the likes of Genghis Khan and Beethoven. I Black Robe ( 15) (Bruce Beresford. US. 1991) Lothaire Bluteau. Aden Young. Sandrine Holt. Stirring version of Brian Moore's tale of a 17th century Jesuit priest travelling across North America to a remote mission takes a realistic view of the savagery of the Indian tribes. Nevertheless. their philosophies and way of life are treated with the same respect as those of the Christians. Bluteau‘s anguished looks are perfect for the conscience-stricken priest who gradually comes to terms with the harsh landscapes and opposing cultures. Edinburgh: UCl.
I Cape Fear(18) (Martin Scorsese. US. 1991) Robert De Niro. Nick Nolte. Jessica Lange. Juliette Lewis. 127 mins. Scorsese's stunning remake of the 1962 original leaves Silence of the Lambs pallid by comparison. De Niro is terrifying as white trash psycho Max Cady. out of prison and stalking the family of the lawyer who suppressed evidence to put him away. Disturbing sexual undertones. centring on lS-year-old Danny (Lewis). make this an even more uncomfortable. but unmissable. top-notch scare-fest. Cannons: The Forge. Sauchiehall Street. Edinburgh. I Celine And Julie Go Boating (15) (Jacques Rivettc. France. 1974) Dominique Labourier. Juliet Berto. Bulle Ogier. Two young women. magician Celine (Berto) and librarian Julie (Labourier) become involved in a repeated drama being played out between a young girl. her widower father and two strange women. Bizarre. allusive masterpiece which works like a cross between Kafka. Lewis Carroll and Borges. and was claimed by critic David Thomson to be ‘the most important film since Citizen Kane‘. A superb film which nonetheless contains something to offend everybody. Beautifully photographed. directed. written. acted and art-directed (with lavish . costumes by Jean Paul Gaultier). its subject matter is at once bizarre. repulsive. romantic and compelling. Centring on Greenaway‘s obsessions with food. decay and infidelity. it‘s an unforgettably stylish tale of forbidden love and brutal revenge. Edinburgh: Cameo.

"the traditional east to west road movie has been given a 90 degree turn here . so has typical American sentimentalism. Nostalgic comedy in the class of Diner and American Graffiti. Don't miss. I Cross My Heart (Jacques Fansten. France. 1991) Sylvain Copans. Nicholas Parodi. Cecilia Rouaud. 100 mins. In a plot vaguely reminiscent of lain McEwan's novel The Cement Garden. a young French schoolboy lives at home with the body of his dead mother. afraid to tell anyone in case he is sent to an orphanage. Fansten squeezes an odd sense of humour out of the situation. particularly through the group of children who decide to ‘help' their friend in his predicament. Central: MacRobert. Fife: Adam Smith.
I Cyrano De Bergerac (U) (Jean-Paul Rappeneau. France. 1990) Gerard Depardieu. Jacques Weber. Anne Brochet. Vincent Perez. 135 mins. A stirring adaptation of Rostand‘s classic. romantic tragi-comedy. Full of grandly mounted. bustling crowd scenes. it revolves around typically superb performance from Depardieu as the large—nosed hero. Although performed in rhyming verse throughout (with subtitles by Anthony Burgess). and a touch overlong, the film‘s dramatic and cinematic qualities are outstanding. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Italian honor maestro Bava turns his hand to comic strip action with this wonderfully bizarre. sub-Bond parody. Enlivened by the director‘s eye for outlandish visuals and some unusual fantasy sequences. Glasgow: GFT.

Carl. a cook in a sleazy Melbourne dive. gets involved in a crazy mix of sex‘n’drugs‘n'rock'n'roll when he falls for a fellow waitress. Falser suspected of murder and arson. he ends up on the run in what has to bethe

Given the title. it's fairly obvious that Hawn‘s sweet and loving hubby (Heard) will turn out to be a raving psycho. and guess what? A suspense-free thriller centring on a happily married art dealer who finds out that her husband and his supposed death in a car crash ain't what they seemed to be. But when fonnerclown Louison (Pinon) arrives and falls for his daughter. an underground vegetarian resistance group come to the rescue. Hilarious blend of bizarre characters. slapstick and comic tension makes for the first true cult item of the ‘90s. Central: MacRobert. I Don't tell raom The Babysitters Dead ( 12) (Stephen Herek. In a somewhat dubious plot development. the elderly babysitter of five kids left at home for the summer kicks the proverbial bucket. leaving the teens to learn how to work together. accept responsibility. etc. etc. For all that. it‘s fairly amusing youth fare that grabs its various sub-plots with both hands. General release. I Own By Law ( 15) (Jim Jarmusch. US. 1986). John Lurie. Roberto Benigni. Tom Waits. Three petty crooks in New Orleans find themselves framed (‘down by law‘) and imprisoned in the heart of the Louisiana swamps. They escape. but the jailbreak is hardly relevant (and hardly explained either) — the crux of the film lies in the relationship between the three men as they make their hazardous way through an alien environment. Benigni just steals the honours from his better-known comrades in J armusch‘s splendidly off-beat. monochrome comedy. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Dream On (15) (Amber Collective. UK. 1991) Maureen Harold. Amber Styles. Anne-Marie Gascoigne. 115 mins. Gritty and authentic depiction of what it is like to be a woman livingon an unemployment-hit housing estate in the north of England. Produced by Newcastle‘s non-profit-making Amber Collective. it manages to get beyond the constraints of similarTV drama~documentaries. Fife: Adam Smith. I Dune (PG) (David Lynch. US. 1985) Kyle McLachlan. Sting. Kenneth McMillan. 133 mins. lncomprehensible attempt by an unsuitable filmmaker to come to terms with Frank Herbert‘s sprawling sci-fi bestseller. Spectacular production design and a few moments of characteristic perversity only do so much to distract the attention from story-telling of numbing ineptitude. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Edward Sclssorhands (PG) (Tim Burton. US. 1991 ) Johnny Depp. Winona Ryder. Dianne Wiest. Vincent Price. 105 mins. Burton follows up the excesses of Batman with this fairy tale for the 905. which works as a welcome return to the darker side of the genre. Depp is the unfinished
creation of The Inventor (Price). who lives alone in a crumbling mansion. unable to even scratch his nose without needing stitches. Discoverd by a friendly Avon lady. his talent for coiffure and topiary makes him a neighbourhood favourite until tragedy strikes. Beautifully shot. tenderly acted and full of hidden depths. Strathclyde: Magnum. I Father of the BrltlflPG) (Charles Shyer. US. 1991) Steve Martin. Diane Keaton. Kimberly Williams. Martin Short. 105 mins. Stepping into the shoes worn by Spencer Tracy in the 1950 original. Steve Martin is nauseating as the over-protective father, unwilling to accept that his baby girl is all grown up. Slushy and barely funny. it‘s another step by Martin along the caring comic route of Parenthood rather than the inspired madness of his early days. Edinburgh: UC 1. IFinalAealysisUS) (Phil Joanou. US. 1992) Richard Gere. Kim Basinger. Uma Thurman. Eric Roberts. 125 mins. TOp psycho-analyst comes into contact with traumatised woman and her attractive sister. Hollywood's formulaic approach to replicating the Hitchcockian thriller falls flat with a movie that is totally signposted and utterly dumb. Final analysis? It‘s a stiff.
