Foster‘s directorial debut suffers from thematically one-sided characters - psychologist Wiest is purely academic growth. Foster (as the working-class mum) purely emotional. US. 1982) With the voices of Christopher Guard. William Squire. Michael Scholes. John Hurt. 133 mins. Successful animated version of the Tolkien epic covers the first two books of the trilogy only. Sticking closely to the text and using live action tracings to give authenticity to the animation. it manages to avoid Disney cuteness and creates an exciting and enjoyable mythical adventure that only the Tolkien purist will find fault with. Body horror maestro takes on the near impossible task offilming William Burroughs‘ controversial novel The Naked Lunch and comes out with a cinematic masterpiece. Elements from Burroughs‘ own life merge with a surreal narrative and the book‘s bizarre. drug-induced sexual imagery. leaving a bewildered. but impressed. audience in their wake. While Streisand‘s direction is sometimes shaky and her own performance is a little too self-conscious. there is no doubt that she encourages career-best performances from her co-stars. Essentially the tale ofa young girl forced to become a concubine and the jealousies she encounters in her fortress home. it also acts as a metaphor for the repression of individual passions in post~Tiananmen China. I That's Entertainment ( P0) (Jack Haley Jr. US. 1974) 137 mins. Vibrant collection ofMGM musical faves. with admittedly skimpy narration given by the likes of Fred Astaire. Gene Kelly. Bing('rosby and Liza Minnelli. While never quite capturing the impact of any of the complete innsicals. it works well as a companion piece. and is worth tracking down for the rarities it contains. I Thelma & Louise ( 15) (Ridlcy Scott. US. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Gccna Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy/road movie genres are turned on their heads as Sarandon anti Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. ()n one level. the film is thecritical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine: just as importantly. it's an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. ITlme Will Tell (15) (Declan Lowney. UK. 1991) TV interviews and 23 songs filmed at live performances and rehearsals between 1973 and 1980 reveal the great Bob Marley as musician. politician anti Rastafarian. The reggae superstar‘s words and music tell the tale without additional commentary. rendering some scenes a tad confusing. but it's worth it to see and hear Marley deliver classics like ‘1 Shot 'lhe Sheriff" and Redemption Song' in a big screen setting. When our hero Ralph is tricked by the dastardly Tommy 'l'ricker into giving away the jewel ofhis father's philatelic collection. he decides to miniaturise himself into the design ofa stamp and setsoff to China in hot pursuit of the villain. An insipid love plot and some lame slapstick gags provide barely enough material to clothe the animated tricks.
