I Agnostic Front and Concrete Sox Venuc. Calton Road, 557 3073. Blistering New York hardcore band with the emphasis on hard - formed in 1982, whose last album, One Voice, was largely written during a two-year prison term served by their singer Roger Miret. They‘ve also had the forum of Donahue to discuss their lyrics, which not everyone can say.

I Spacers Subway. Cowgate. 225 6766. 10pm. Suspected thrashy types.

I The Receiving End Negoeiants, Lothian Street, 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. lcan exclusively reveal (ahem) that the debut CD-single from this Kirkcaldy band, ‘That‘s The Way 1 Operate‘ is really rather impressive; melodious, with two guitars egging each other on throughout. Possible contenders here, and hopefully a well-attended gig for them.

TUESDAY 5 Glasgow

I Mayfest. See separate listings.

I Ozric Tentacles and Dodgy Mayfair, Sauchiehall Street , 332 3872. A varied agenda from cult hippy experimentalists Ozric Tentacles. Last time in this parish saw them leaning too heavily on intricate (ie boring) guitar exhibitionism at the expense of spaced-out weirdness and ambience. Dodgy are a hotch-potch of psychedelic influences and cantankerous attitude, who recently brushed with the Law following an impromptu protest rally. I Pig and Terminal Power Company King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. A double bill ofhard clanking industrial tinnitus-here-we-come sounds.

I The Basement, Glass Onion and Dog Cotton Club, Scott Street, 332 0712. 9pm. £3. Cheerful rootsy rock songs with anthemic possibilities from The Basement. Supported by rockers old and new.

I Better Ways and Sub (acoustic) Apollo, Renfrew Court, 332 6231 . 9pm. Free. Spunky, dancey pop/rock and confident stage presence. but it could still be anyone up there playing.

I Scud, The Gasmen. Geezanee and Now With Wings Nice‘n‘Sleazy, Sauchiehall Street, 333 9637. 8.30pm. £1 .

I Sunny Boys Cathedral House. Cathedral Square, 552 3519. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Marcha Fresco Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. 9pm. Marcha Fresca claim to have developed considerably with all that time spent recording their demo, though their rocky funk sound was streamlined in the first place.

I Murmur Negoeiants, Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free. See Sat 25.

I Live music Bertie‘s, Merchant Street, 225 2002. 10.30pm. Free.

I Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds and The God Machine Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 226 4679. See feature for Nick Cave. Rather than wander ponderously in Nick~style gloom, The God Machine choose to exorcise their bugbears in front of their audience with Sabbath riffs and spacey psychedelia. Heady stuff and highly recommended in large doses.

I Ahnrein and Nyah Fearties Apollo. Renfrew Court, 332 6231 . 9pm. £1 . Long-serving militant Welsh language band with a latent power behind their punky approach. The same could be said of Nyah Fearties (except the Welsh language bit).

I Jum Fixx Ii , Miller Street, 221 1568. 9pm. Free.

Edinburgh

I Paul Brady Queen's Hall, South Clerk Street, 668 2019. £7.50 plus booking fee. From spending several years at the forefront ofthe Irish traditional scene with The Johnstons and Planxty to being a pop songwriter beloved of Tina Turner, Bonnie Raitt. Mark Knopfler and Bob Dylan (from whose lips came the oft-repeated ‘secret hero’ quote) was no great leap for Paul Brady, but crossing over into the realm of star performer has been a trickier task. Not that he'sdoing too badly as it is, mind.

I Ozric Tentacles and Dodgy Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. 7pm. See Tue 5. I Coast Subway, Cowgate , 225 6766. 10pm. New band over from Glasgow with the help of Tennents Live!

I Public image Limited and Live Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £8.50 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin, Union Street. 226 4679. When John Lydon‘s not making a hona fide nuisance ofhimself (Grow up, man! no one cares about someone who‘s angry just for the sake of being angry), PiL can still knuckle down and get some brilliant corruscating sounds out ofa guitar; which is why they have outlasted most of their contemporaries. I Zutl La Chute, Bollin' Joe (solo) and Cinnhor Ferryfest, Renfrew Ferry, Clyde Place, 429 3766. 9pm. £4 (£3). Edinurgh

I Juez Jazz Quintet Scandic Crown Hotel. High Street. 8pm. £5. Danish quintet with a fusion-orientated sound and a name which is a play on ‘jazz‘ and ‘blues‘. Singer Trine Dansgaard has a fresh and pleasantly lyrical manner, and the tight and imaginative band steer away from familiar cliches.
