(£4). Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street , 226 4679. Now‘s the time to see if punk nostalgia has really made its mark on the public. You‘ve bought the compilations, now will you rush out to see the bands? Sham 69 were (and still are) regarded as the cartoon contingent of punk but vocalist Jimmy Pursey was recently invited to sing on Die Totenhosen's new album - a sign that he still has some slavering fans out there. Support from local punk band.

I EMF and Silverfish Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street , 668 2019. J umped-up pantry boys or enfanrs terribles? For all the teeny audience they attract, there’s still a good deal of debate over EMF. Their cover of The Stooges‘ ‘Search And Destroy‘ on the current single suggests they prefer the latter description. Poppy but powerful, and mountains Of exuberance. Silverfish are heavier, louder, faster . . . and probably sexier and more fun. This is the first of three opportunities to catch them in Scotland in as many months.

I The Acoustic River Detectives and Nick Robertson Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. We may. after a lengthy break, soon be hearing fresh material from The River Detectives, as they have laid down several tracks for a proposed album. Even after dropping out of the spotlight, having been dropped by Wamers, they should still be able to pull a crowd with their finely-wrought melodies. Nick Robertson, who should be able to swap tales of unfair record company treatment with them backstage, keeps his new band The Cooler in the wings and plays an acoustic set.
I Sham 69 and Bleeding Hearts Music Box, Victoria Street, 225 2564. 9pm. To set some of our younger readers straight, it wasn't actually Sham who gave punk 3 bad name. No, Jimmy Pursey's heart was usually in the right place , their songs were anthems of youth united against the forces of oppression and you’d be surprised at
how many wrinklies light up at the mention of ‘Hurry Up Harry’. lt wasthe crap bands who formed in their wake that really put the lid on it. (And Mensi is Morrissey‘s new confidante . . . funny old world.) Support band Bleeding Hearts were previously known to one and all as Baby‘s Got A Gun.
