With theink now well and truly dry on their Silvertone c0ntract,The Lost Soul Band plan to deliver their debut LP in early summer. In the meantime, here‘s a live appearance to whet appetites (and perhaps try out forthcoming material?), chock full of rock-roots and, indeed, soul.

I The Thanes and Jetboy Lord Darnley, West Port, 229 4341. 9. 30pm. The reliable old Thanes whip out those Vox Teardrops or whatever arcane 60$ instruments they‘ve got stored away and regale us with pre-hippie garage sounds. Are they still as big in the Netherlands? I think we should be told.

I Bab Howitt Lord Darnley, West Port, 2294341 . 4pm. Free. Blues.

I The Bad Men Trader Vic‘s, Victoria Street, 225 3326. 9.30pm. Free. Bad Taste Men more like, since their notoriety derives entirely from such ditties as ‘Rock Hudson‘s Dead (Because He Slept With Men In Bed)‘. Like the sound ofthat? They‘ve got a whole set‘s worth.

Edinburgh

I Dundertunlt, Cheesegrater and The Squirts Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. A night of Dunderfunk‘s occasional Frottage (oh dear) Club. Lighthearted funky metal in the Chili Peppers mould from the headliners— totally Americanised, but still sweaty and raw. Perhaps the fact they display their sense of humour so prominently has kept away the men with the big cheque books.

I The Brothers Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. £1 after 9.30pm.

I Orchestre Murphy Apollo, Renfrew Court, 332 6231 . 8.30pm. £2.50 (£2). The unfettered sound of an avant-garde tradition that throws together jazz, rock and everything else that comes to hand in one. Semi-improvised music that often seems like undisciplined caterwauling but is capable of lifting the top off your head when it all comes together. ‘House band‘ at London‘s adventurous Club Integral.

Edinburgh

I L7 Calton Studios, Calton Road. 556 7066. Gutsy kickass rock‘n‘roll, as if you expected anything different from this highly-rated LA four-piece. With a new London Records deal, the melodic sense ofThe Bangles, and Nirvana producer Butch Vig at the controls of their new single, ‘Pretend We‘re Dead‘, there‘s every reason to suspect they‘ll crack it in this country. The ex-Sub Popsters won the ‘Best hard rock band on an indie label‘ category in February's LA Music Awards. I Texas Breakfast Preservation Hall, Victoria Street, 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free. What do you say about living legends such as these? There‘s four of them? They’re the tops? Not as good as the Isley Brothers, but let‘s not quibble, at least they‘re still around.

I The Australian Doors Barrowland, Gallowgate, 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £7 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin, Union Street, 2264679. Last year‘s glut of Doors nostalgia, which stretched many fans‘ patience, doesn‘t seem to have alienated this bunch. Like Bjorn Again they‘ve mastered the leap from small to large venue in a matter of weeks. And there‘s more where they came from. Stand by for Australian carbon copies of B-52s, REM, Meat Loaf, Milli Vanilli, The Village People . . . we kid you not.

I Doctor Pop Apollo, Renfrew Court, 332 623 1 . 9pm. Free. Metallic funk.

I The Thin Men Fixx 11, Miller Street, 221 1568. 9pm. Free.
