‘Tourists are, by definition, uninvolved; travellers are involved. This book is, in a way, not for travellers because they don’t need it. It’s for that small percentage of tourists who are unhappy being tourists, to try to move them to being travellers.’ So says Jim Haynes, the man behind a radical new series of travel books entitled People To People. Haynes defines travellers as people who use their foreign visits as a learning experience and are keen to put something back into the community that has been their host. The series, which begins this month with Poland and Romania, eschews traditional descriptions oi sights to be seen and trips to be taken, preferring instead to follow a more personal route. Names, addresses, phone numbers and hobbies of over 1000 individuals living in the towns and cities oi the chosen country are listed in handy pocket-sized form. Each speaks at least one language other than their mothertongue and is keen to take time to meet visitors from the UK and show them around. The books’ format is particularly suitable for solo travellers,
.contacts for all travellers.
‘People list their passions,’ explains
Haynes, ‘so if you're going to a city like
Warsaw or Krakow, and you’re a chess player, you find someone in the book who’s the same, write to them ahead of time and maybe arrange a few games together. To have contacts is the difference between having a fairfime and having a great time.’
Haynes, an American living in Paris, is a familiar figure in Scotland. A driving force behind Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre and co-founder of the newspaper International Times and infamous ‘European Sexpaper’ Suck, he has travelled extensively in Eastern Europe, noting that, post-political reform, these people are crying out for
contact with the West. Further books on :
Czechoslovakia and Hungary are expected laterthis year, and members of the Tartan Army awaiting the away
leg of the World Cup qualifier in Estonia
next year may be interested to know that one on the Baltic Republics will be on the shelves before then.

People To People is published by Canongate Press, priced £4.95. Anyone wishing to be included in a possible book of UK contacts to be published for Eastern European travellers should contact Jim Haynes c/o Canongate Press, 14 Frederick Street, Edinburgh EH2 2H0.
