l speedy rise through the ranks for
I Love/Hate. who debuted in Scotland at
1 King Tut‘s only 18 months ago. They must have something to distinguish them from the morass oftraditional HM bands. but it eludes us. The Four Horsemen have had
to pull out of the support slot because their
singer has developed throat nodes.

1 King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent
; Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. The most
! powerful. epic and metallic (what else can you expect from a band with Bruce Dickinson's cousin as their singer?) ofthe shoegazing crop. with as much in common with Magazine as with My Bloody Valentine. The debut album Ferment has rightly been acclaimed and even grazed the Top 40 on its release.
I Botany 5 and The Hummingbirds Strathclyde University Union. John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Mellow. urbane pop with a sophisticated backbeat. Support comes from The Hummingbirds. the band formed by original Del Amitri member Brian Tolland.

Second 1 visit to Edinburgh for Newcastle's | Sunflowers. who have a couple of i independent singles under their belts and . now. apparently. interest from America. ' Once again. they ‘re supported by Edinburgh‘s Gila Monster. a maverick. guitar-abusing ensemble fronted by Tom Worthington. in whose body the spirit of rock‘n‘roll currently resides. I Bluetinger Platform One. Rutland Street. 225 2433. 9pm. Free. See Sat 28. I Bluellnger Morrisons. Morrison Street. 229 6683. 11.15pm. Free. See above. I The Broadcasters Preservation Hall. SUNDAY 5 Glasgow
I The Charlatans Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601. 7.30pm. £8 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. and Virgin. Princes Street. Edinburgh. 031 220 0925. After two hesitant but hopeful showcases at King Tut‘s — where. incidentally. the new material compared very well with the old pop lovables —The Charlatans return for a blast of the full show. The quirky ‘Weirdo‘ has rehabilitated their chart profile; now they‘ll be hoping their second album Between 101/1 And 11th will get the same cuddly reception as Some Friendly.
I Dom Against, Downlall and Sedition Apollo. Renfrew Court. 332 6231 . 9pm. £3. A brash. noisy Glasgow Music Collective presentation.
I The Braves Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712.11pm.£2.
I Elephant Noise Fixx 11. Miller Street. 221 1568. 9pm. Free.
I Abraxus Tudor Lodge Hotel. Burnbank Road. Hamilton. 0698 457277. 8pm. £1 .
I Julte Fanny By Gaslight. Kilmarnock. Juke used to be The Longhorns and boast a sound which traces the familiar route of most Glasgow pop but sounds at times like an AOR version of The Waterboys.
Edinburgh
I Dream Disciples Music Box. Victoria Street. 225 2564. Although their claims to be taking goth music out of the 80s seem strained — didn‘t goth music sound just like this in the 805? — Dream Disciples‘debut mini-LP Veil Of Tears is pretty accomplished and a cut above just about every other small local band that's played in that style. A Tennents Live-promoted tour of the Highlands is coming up. and no doubt greater things after that.
I The Hummingbirds Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.
I Bluelinger Green Tree. Gorgie Road. 337 1031. 1pm. Free. See Sat28.

MONDAY 6 Glasgow
I Julia Fordham Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Sauchiehall Street. 6.30pm. £10.50. £9.50. Tickets from the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. The supposedly archetypal ‘woman of the 90s’ has never really had the wide impact her record company marketing department were hoping for. except as an integral part ofa nation‘s coffee table CD collections. Like Lisa Stansfield without the underlying pop appeal
I PJ Harvey King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. See preview.
Edinburgh
I Nazareth Venue, Calton Road. 557 3073. Maybe Nazareth haven‘t toured Britain for six years and their new (eighteenth) album. No Jive is on Mausoleum Records. but they‘re far from dead. doing incredible business overseas and being cited by Axl Rose and AC/DC‘s Brian Johnson as major influences. N0 Jive is reckoned to be their best for years. and may. who knows. spark offa new wave of interest in the band.
I Lothian Region Schools Electric Guitar Ensemble St Bride‘s Centre. Orwell Terrace. 346 1405. 8pm. £4 (£2). Six quartets. abetted by rhythm section.
keyboards and vocals. charge their way through a selection of rock and blues classics.
I Hogswash Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.
I Live music Bertie‘s. Merchant Street. 225 2002. 10.30pm. Free.
TUESDAY 7 Glasgow
I Tori Amos City Hall. Candleriggs. 7pm. £7.50. £6 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. and the Ticket Centre. Candleriggs. 227 5511. A speedy return forthe American Kate Bush. She hasthe presence (though she veers far too close to affectation for comfort). the histrionic vocals. but sadly the startling tunes seem to evade her.
I Nazareth Cathouse. Hollywood Studios. Brown Street. 248 6606. 8pm. £7. See Mon 6.
I Richie Henderson and Stuart Nisbet Cathedral 1 louse. Cathedral Squarc.552 3519. 9pm. Free. Two ex-Liberties still playing together.
Edinburgh
I The Countrymen Negociants. Lothian Street. 2256313. 9.30pm. Free.Tuneful but vigorous and hard-edged songs. Worth a look.
I Live music Bertie‘s. Merchant Street. 225 2002. 10.30pm. Free.
WEDNESDAY 8 Glasgow
I Die Toten Hosen King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £5. Oddball German quasi-punks much fancied in the mid-80s. whom everyone assumed had gone back to being stockbrokers. pigfarmers. etc. Their name means ‘the dead trousers‘ — a completely pointless fact that was constantly pointed out during the first flush of interest. About to release an album ofcovers of the songs that inspired them to start out in the first place — it includes songs by The Lurkers and Wreckless Eric.
I Elias RGs. Queen Street. 221 2200. 10pm. Free.
I Strange Fish Fixx 11. Miller Street. 221 1568. 9pm. Free.
Edinburgh
I Tori Amos Queen‘s Hall. South Clerk Street. 668 2019. 7.30pm. £7.50plus booking fee. A swift return to Edinburgh for Tori. but to a much bigger venue than she was playing only weeks ago. How long this fuss will continue to rage around heris anybody‘s guess. but performance rather than songwriting seems to be her forte; that her version of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit' deserves a place in anybody‘s collection seems to underline this.
I Miracle Head and The Twist Garbage And Honey Club. Subway. Cowgate. 225 6766. 10pm—3am. £2.5()(£2).
