stars as a highly successful director destroyed by rumours. with Bening as his supportive ex-wife. Despite cumbersome pacing. the performances and good intentions are strong enough to make this a very watchable movie. and the courtroom climax is well worth waiting for. Glasgow: Grosvenor. More than twenty years after Zeffirelli's Romeo Andlulie! comes this colourful and lively production of Shakespeare's greatest play. with a very strong. mostly British cast and the best performance in years from Gibson in the title role. Beatie Edney. Sean Connery. 111 mins. A handful ofimmortals battle through the centuries to win a mythical priZe. A curious mixture of romance in loth century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant . often ludicrous. but enjoyably daffy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only the ever wonderful Connery has the requisite style for the kitsch Scottish scenes. Edinburgh: Cameo. Left to his own devices young Kevin (Culkin) has to deal with two bungling burglars (Pesci and Stern) who threaten to invade his peaceful haven. In this zippy spoofof the Seventies blaxploitation cycle. writer/director'star Wayans returns home from the army only to find the ghetto hooked on gold chains. Reuniting former tough guy-sand blaxploitation icons Brown and Hayes. he decides to go after the white Mr Big who controls the market. Wayans hits several right notes of absurdity in this send-up of an already ridiculous genre. Edinburgh: Cameo.
IJFK ( 15) (Oliver Stone. US. 1991 ) Kevin Costner. Joe Pesci. Gary Oldman. Tommy Lee Jones. 19(1mins. Based on the controversial theories of New ()rleans district attorney Jim Garrison. Stone's epic account ofwhat did or did not happen when President Kennedy made an untimely exit from this world makes for enthralling cinema. A fine performance by Costner is supported by one of the finest casts ever assembled before the camera. Regardless of verity of his argument. this is Stone‘s most powerful effort to date. iGeneral release.

Black yuppie Flipper Purify (Snipes) launches into an ill-fated affair with his Italian-American secretary (Sciorra) and adds fuel to the fire ofinter-racial tensions. Spike Lee‘s latest controversial work also includes a major subplot on drugaddiction. which leaves the audience wondering if he has tackled too many ‘big‘ issues at once. Still. it'sa stylish piece with some good performances. even if the director's message is not exactly positive. Glasgow: GFT. Central: Macrobert Arts Centre. I The Killing of a Chinese Bookie ( 18) (John Cassavetes. US. 1976) Ben Gazzara.Timothy Carey. Seymour Cassel. 109 mins. Cassavetes uses his central plot — a bunch of gangsters try to muscle in on the owner of a sleazy nightclub — asa metaphor for his own position as a dedicated filmmaker fighting for his artisticindependence. Hugely contradictory and convoluted. it's still up there with his best work. thanks to the space he gives his actors and the performances they give in return. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.

Unsuccessful mainstream vehicle for screen heart-throb Slater. who stars as a college drop-out who inherits a private police squad. The comedy. action and Slater's idiosyncratic style just fail to gel. leaving a celuloid mess that should be arrested for indecent exposure. See feature. General release (Week 2).
