INDEX FILM

stars as a highly successful director destroyed by rumours. with Bening as his supportive ex-wife. Despite cumbersome pacing. the performances and good intentions are strong enough to make this a very watchable movie. and the courtroom climax is well worth waiting for. Glasgow: Grosvenor. More than twenty years after Zeffirelli's Romeo Andlulie! comes this colourful and lively production of Shakespeare's greatest play. with a very strong. mostly British cast and the best performance in years from Gibson in the title role. Edinburgh: Filmhousc. I Hear My Song ( 15) (Peter Chelsom. UK‘lreIand. 1991 ) Adrian Dunbar. Ned Beatty. Tara Fitzgerald. 11)} mins. Devious but loveable promoter Mickey (Dunbar) tries to win back his reputation and the woman he loves by booking famous Irish tenor and tax fugative Josefl.ocke for his Liverpool nightclub. US. 1990) Fred Ward. Uma Thurman. Maria de Maderios. Richard E. Grant. 137 mins. The triangular relationship between the erotic writers Henry Miller and Anais Nin and Miller's wife June isthe backbone of this well mounted biopic. which suffers from the slightly incongruous explicitness of Kaufman's previous Unbearable Lightness Of Being and the same uncomfortably slow pace. Edinburgh: Cameo. I High Hools(15) (Pedro Almodovar. Spain. 1991) Victoria Abril. Miguel Bose. Marisa Paredes. 115 mins. More melodramatic frolics from Spain's finest. this time in the shape ofa murderous triangle between a mother. her daughter and the latter's husband. While Almodovar isn't quite at his best. Beatie Edney. Sean Connery. 111 mins. A handful ofimmortals battle through the centuries to win a mythical priZe. A curious mixture of romance in loth century heather and car chases in present day New York. the film is an inelegant . often ludicrous. but enjoyably daffy adventure. Lambert seems more at home with the contemporary passages and only the ever wonderful Connery has the requisite style for the kitsch Scottish scenes. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Hitchor(18) (Robert Mandel. US. 1986) Rutger Haucr. C. Thomas Howell.JenniferJason Icigh. 98 mins. Drowsy driver Howell gets more than he bargained for when he picks up psycho-hitcher Hauer in this genuinely edge-of-the-seat suspense thriller. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Home Alone (PG) (Chris Columbus. the last survivor of a race of vampires. whose sexual partners enjoy an extended lifespan. followed by a rather sharp decline. Bowie (who looks rather more healthy in his second century than he does now) and Sarandon are her victims. Beautiful and erotic. but pretty darned confusing. Edinburgh: Cameo.

I I'm Gonna 811 You Suclta ( 15) (Keenan Ivory Wayans. US. 1988) Keenan Ivory Wayans. Isaac Hayes. Jim Brown. 89 mins. In this zippy spoofof the Seventies blaxploitation cycle. writer/director'star Wayans returns home from the army only to find the ghetto hooked on gold chains. Reuniting former tough guy-sand blaxploitation icons Brown and Hayes. he decides to go after the white Mr Big who controls the market. IJFK ( 15) (Oliver Stone. US. 1991 ) Kevin Costner. Joe Pesci. Gary Oldman. Tommy Lee Jones. 19(1mins. Based on the controversial theories of New ()rleans district attorney Jim Garrison. Stone's epic account ofwhat did or did not happen when President Kennedy made an untimely exit from this world makes for enthralling cinema. A fine performance by Costner is supported by one of the finest casts ever assembled before the camera. Regardless of verity of his argument. this is Stone‘s most powerful effort to date. iGeneral release.

Spike Lee‘s latest controversial work also includes a major subplot on drugaddiction. which leaves the audience wondering if he has tackled too many ‘big‘ issues at once. Still. it'sa stylish piece with some good performances. even if the director's message is not exactly positive. Glasgow: GFT. Central: Macrobert Arts Centre. I The Killing of a Chinese Bookie ( 18) (John Cassavetes. US. 1976) Ben Gazzara.Timothy Carey. Seymour Cassel. 109 mins. Cassavetes uses his central plot a bunch of gangsters try to muscle in on the owner of a sleazy nightclub asa metaphor for his own position as a dedicated filmmaker fighting for his artisticindependence. Hugely contradictory and convoluted. it's still up there with his best work. thanks to the space he gives his actors and the performances they give in return. Edinburgh: Filmhousc.

I KIIIIS (15) (Bruce A. Evans. US. 1991 ) Christian Slater. Tony Goldwyn. Milla Jovovich. 102 mins.
