melancholy and emotional understanding to a role that is essentially an intellectual variation on mid-life crisis. Glasgow: GFI‘. I Suburban Commando (PG) (Burt Kennedy. US. 1991) Hulk Hogan. Christopher Lloyd. Shelley Duval. Larry Miller. 91 mins. Professional wrestler and over-the-top star Hulk Hogan is Shep Ramsey. an intergalactic crusader marooned on Earth. whose heroic deeds are threatened by the arrival ofa pair of alien bounty hunters. Silly plot and cheapo special effects aside. enough laughs are milked out of the situation to make fora relatively painless cinema sitting. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. WMR Film Centre. I The Terminator( 18) (James Cameron. US. 1984) Arnold Schwarzenegger. Michael Biehn. Linda Hamilton. 107 mins. In 2029 machines have all but conquered the planet but a saviour is at hand in the form ofa new human leader. The machines respond by sending Schwarzenegger‘s cyborg back in time to 1984 on a mission to kill the future leader's mother. Inventive. excitingly-paced science-fiction adventure with a notable performance from Arnie in his first villainous role. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Terminator 2: Judgement Day( 15) (James Cameron. US. 1991 ) Arnold Swarzenegger. Linda Hamilton. Edward Furlong. Robert Patrick. 136 mins. The most expensive film ever made. In a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the first movie. Arnie becomes the underdog fighting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive action sequences. as Swarzcnegger's cyborg develops human feelings. this is more than just a $100 million fairground ride. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Thelma 8t Louise ( 15) (Ridley Scott. US. 1991) Susan Sarandon. Geena Davis. Harvey Keitel. Michael Madsen. 129 mins. The buddy road movie genres are turned on their heads as Sarandon and Davis grasp the steering wheel and head off leaving a trail of murder and mayhem in their wake. On one level. the film is the critical catalyst that had the feminists cheering and put the stars on the cover of Time magazine; just as importantly. it's an accessible piece of entertainment with excellent central performances. Glasgow: Gl-T. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. Strathclydc: ()deon Ayr. I Theorem ( 18) (Pier Paulo Pasolini. Italy. 1968) Terence Stamp. Silvana Mangano. Massimo Girotti. Anne Wiazemsky. 98mins. Glasgow: GFT. I The Tin Drum Die Blet'ltrrmnmel ( l8) ( Volker Schlondorff. WGermany. 1979) David Benncnt. Mario Adorf. Charles Aznavour. 141 mins. Compelling screen version of the Gunter Grass novel about a young boy who refuses to grow up as the Nazis rise to power in Germany. Glasgow: GFI‘. I TO Sleep Wllh Angeu 12) (Charles Burnett. US. 1990) Danny Glover. Paul Butler. Mary Alice. Carl Lumbly. Richard Brooks. 101 mins. An ambitious and charming attempt by black director Burnett to confront racial tensions in the US. Based on an old Georgian legend. it tells the story of traditionalist shit~stirrer Trickster. w ho visits friends in LA and causes everyone a lot ofbotbcr. chnly political yet warm-hearted. this is a kindof Southern West Coast response to Spike Lee's [)u [/10 Right Thing. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I‘lrust ( 15)(Hal Hartley. CS. 1990) Adrienne Shelly. Martin Donovan. Merritt Nelson. 9tlrnins. ln suburban Middle America. a rebellious high-school dropout (Shelly) leaves home after causing her father‘s fatal heart attack by announcing she‘s pregnant. By chance. she meets the dangerous but intelligent Matthew . who has also rebelled and lost his job. L'S. 199(1) Jack Nicholson. Harvey Keitcl. Meg'l'illy. Madeleine Stowe. 132 mins. Troubled sequel to Roman Polanski's Chinatown secs Nicholson's private eye J .J. Gittes caught tip in murder case involving sleazy LA corruption and a few uncomfortable memories for the drawlingone. Intelligent script. again by Robert Towne. fleshes out the original characters but builds a plot that is jUst too damn complicated. Nevertheless. it makes for a stylish and intriguing alternative to typically formulaic sequels. Glasgow: (ii-T. ITbe Unbelievable Truth( 15) ( Hal Hartley. US. 1989) Adrienne Shelly. Robert Burke. Christopher Cooke. Julia McNeal. 89mins. finigntatic and chansmatically performed
.indepcndent small-tow n romance. which looks
like a cross between Jarmusch and early Godard. Young. impressionable Audry (Shelly) falls for
shy ex-con Josh (Burke). a man whose saintly aura belies rumours of a violent past. As his dark history is unveiled. and Audry embarks on a lucrative career in modelling. Hartley explores the implications of ‘truth‘ in the multi-faccted but platitudinous context of modern American society and beyond. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Urga (PG) (Nikita Mikhalkov. France/USSR. 1991) Badema. Bayacrtu. Vladimir Gostukhin. 120 mins. The simple tale of a nomadicshepherd who leaves the Mongolian steppcs to go shopping in town is transformed into an awe-inspiring piece of true cinema. Grand. poetic. visually stunning and alien — words cannot describe the sights and sounds of the landscape and the people who inhabit it. See review. Glasgow: OFT. I Les Valeeuses ( 18) (Bertrand Blier. France. 197-1) Gerard Depardicu. Patrick Dewaere. Miou-Miou. Jeanne Moreau. 118 mins. Undeniany offensive early feature by Blier that makes for interesting comparisons witlfhis latest. Merci La Vie. Two youths go on a spree that involves sex. car theft. sex. robbery and a bit of sex thrown in for good measure. Halfway between romantic fugatives and bawdy delinquents. they eventually develop into something approaching human beings. while Blier‘s direction just manages to stay on the right side ofcontrolled mayhem. Taking the idea seriously. he begins to live out a Gothic nightmare. in which modern New York takes on the stark. shadowy qualitiesof German expressionism. Cage‘s acting is ludicrously overwrought. but in the context it serves a spicy blend ofsatirical comedy and horror beautifully. Edinburgh: Cameo. I VltglM 18) (Catherine Breillat. France. 1988) Delphine Zentout. liticnne Chicot. Olivier Parniere. 88 mitts. Fourteen year-old Zentout is on holiday with her family. and attempts to dissipate her boredom with a taste of the local nightlife.
