I Little Village Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. £11.50. The return of the supergroups— and a nation trembles in itstrainers. Thankfully. Little Village sound a lot more palatable than supergroups of yore. since it incorporates the unchallenged talents of Ry Cooder, Nick Lowe, John Hiatt and peerless drummer Jim Keltner (how many albums in your collection has he played on?). The only mystery is why did they fight so hard for the rights toa name that another band already played under? It‘s not that great.
I Diesel Part: West and Big Huge Massive Venue, Calton Road, 557 3073. See preview.
I Static (TBC) Music Box, Victoria Street. 225 2564. 9pm. One of the best and most atmospheric demos to come out of Glasgow last year was Static‘s. They've been quiet for a few months, allowingthe likes of Fenn to overshadow them, but I for one am champing at the bit to see how they’ve developed since. Vaguer in the shoegazing mould, but with a bit more Loop bollocks and a bit less Slowdive . . . er. complete bollocks.
I Long Fin Killie, Jerry Krishna and Glue Subway, Cowgate. 225 6766. Two hardcore-influenced bands supporting
Long Fin Killie. who thrash theirguitars and incorporate some folk instruments into the sound— ‘but not.‘ they emphasise. ‘in a folky way.‘

MONDAY 24 Glasgow
I The Firecharmers Gen. Paisley College ofTechnology. Hunter Street. Paisley. 8899940. 8pm. Free. From Liverpool.
Edinburgh
I ‘I’he Wedding Present Venue. Calton Road. 557 3073. For reasons best known to themselves (like their policy of releasing twelve monthly singles this year). the Weddoes have chosen to play this absurdly small place for their only Scottish gig. Definite case of ‘getting back to our roots’ paranoia. There should be some tickets available on the night. but only for the earliest arrivals.
I Geoitrey Williams Music Box. Victoria Street. 225 2564. A new EMl signingwho cites Stevie Wonder. Prince. Marvin Gaye. Hendrix and Rickie Lee Jones among his influences. Single due in March. followed by his debut album. Bare a month later. He‘ll be back here supporting the Wets. Not above posing with bare-chested young maidens. which is a worrying sign.
I Dig Bedroom Noise Negociants. Lothian Street. 225 6313. 9.30pm. Free.
TUESDAY 25 Glasgow
I Levitation and Thrum King Tut‘s Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. We could praise Levitation to the skies for their wasted spiralling epics and uncharted sonic landscapes blah de blah blah. but you could read that anywhere and life‘s too short. Basically it‘s like this. kids; if you‘re down to your last £4. sod the gas bills. the rent payments. your next meal - spend it on this gig. You owe it to yourselves to be there. Even the mighty Thrum (Maria McKee fronts Teenage Fanclub. spurious comparison fans) have their work cut out for them next tothis powerhouse of talent.
I Sub Apollo. Renfrew Court. 3326231. 9pm. Free. Recently supported Five Thirty in London.
I The Prairie Boys Cathedral House. Cathedral Square. 552 3519. 9pm. Free.
Edinburgh
I Botany 5. Zulu Syndicate and Makossa Network. West Tollcross. 228 3252. 8pm—4am. £5 (£4 advance). A dance spectacular taking up all three floors ofthe Network and demonstrating that the future of dance music (shocker!) is the live band. Botany 5 unveil their new line-up. which includes the great Zeke Manyika on drums and the bassist from BBC‘s Rockschool (remember him?). while Zulu Syndicate show how they‘ve beefed up their brass element. Old hands Makossa play their usual mixture of African pop. reggae and soul.
I Auntie Rose Music Box. Victoria Street. 225 2564. 9pm. Rare Edinburgh date for up~and-coming Glasgow popsters with a heavy edge and incongruous trombone.
I The Firecharmers Gen Club. Heriot Watt Student Union, Riccarton Campus. 4495111. 9.30pm. Free.
I The Wishing Negociants. Lothian Street. 2256313. 9.30pm. Free. See Fri 14.
