Reeves is the eager young FBI recruit on the trail of a group oflatex-maskcd bank robbers who are known to be surfers. Board under arm. he heads for the waves. Bigelow tackles cliches of buddy partnerships. macho bullshit and thriller shoot-outs with fresh energy. creating a terrific movie that has one foot in reality. the other in an absurdist world. Following the death in a New York shoot-out ofa crook. the much-admired cop responsible for his killing (Nolte) is hauled up before a grandjury. But when the DA (Hutton) digs deeper. he discovers this isn‘t an open-and-shut case of justifiable homicide. Typically assured. hard-bitten and suspenseful thriller. written and directed by Lumct with the authority of experience. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I La Beale Du Jeu (PG) (Jean Renoir. France. 1939) Marcel Dalio. Nora Gregor. Jean Renoir. 113 mins. A weekend shooting party for the assorted bourgeoisie results in a welter of romantic intrigue and a hint oftragedy. Suppressed during the war because censors objected to its portrayal of French moral degeneration. Renoir‘s celebrated comedy can now be seen as a triumph of bleak satire and fluid cinematic technique. Edinburgh: French Institute. I Rhapsody in August (U) (Akira Kurosawa. Japan. 1991) Richard Gere. Sachiko Murase. Hidetaka Yoshioka. 104 mins. A poetic and elegaic work from octogenerian Kurosawa. ()n the 45th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki. a survivor and her grandchildren find out that her long-lost brother. who emigrated to Hawaii. is still alive. Beautifully observed characters are placed in a wonderfully expressive landscape. Glasgow: (ii-T. I Rift-Bell ( 15) (Ken Loach. UK. 1991) Robert Carlyle. Emer McCourt. Ricky Tomlinson. Jimmy Coleman. 94 mins. A lighter-than-usual investigation of British poverty from our foremost political director. written from first-hand experience by former labourer Bill Jesse. Glaswegian-in-London Stevie (Carlyle) grinds out a meagre living on a building site andenters into a relationship with Susan (McCourt). who has musical aspirations. The jolly badinage of Stevie‘s co-workers (among them ex-Bmokie Tomlinson) provides an enjoyably humorous backdrop. for which the Grim-Down-South message comes over all the more forcefully. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves ( 12) (Kevin Reynolds. US. 1991 ) Kevin Costner. Morgan Freeman. Christian Slater. Alan Rickman. 147 mins. Second outing of the year for the Nottingham legend. this time with Hollywood‘s golden boy in the title role. Costner's Robin slips into Indiana Jones mode as he sets about undoing the wrongs of Rickman's scene-stealing Sheriff in a way that is wonderfully reminiscent of the best Saturday matinee swashbucklers. Edinburgh: Cameo. Strathclyde: Odeon Ayr. I Racketeer (PG) (Joe Johnston. US. 1991) Bill Campbell. Jennifer Connelly. Alan Arkin. Timothy Dalton. 109 mins. After discovering a stolen experimental rocket pack. out-of-luck pilot Cliff Secord (Campbell) finds himselfassuming the role of mystery flying figure The Rocketeer in order to save his girlfriend. battle Nazis and save the civilised world. roughly in that order. Great.

An effective treatment ofShakespearc‘s Nol weepie. made all the more accessible by the casting of teenage leads. Unfortunately. it‘s difficult to keep a straight face now that the soundtrack has been hi-jacked by Radio 1‘s ()ur Tune spot. Glasgow: GET. I Humble F18h(18) (Francis Ford Coppola. US. 1983) Mickey Rourke. Dennis Hopper. Matt Dillon. 94 mins. Electrifying expressionist visuals grace this rites of passage parable about the need to forge one's own identity and the alienation it can bring. Intense and stylish. Edinburgh: Cameo. I Saleem Bombay! ( 15) (Mira Nair. India/France/UK. 1988) Shafiq Syed. Raghubir Yadav. Aneeta Kanwar. 113 mins. A marvellous movie shot on location in Bombay. which records the lives of the city’s thronging street urchins. focusing on young Krishna‘s descent into a seedy underworld of prostitution and narcotics as he tries to earn his fare back to his native village.This auspicious debut from Indian woman film-maker Nair avoids the obvious. and makes its moral points through its sympathy for the remarkable children whose indomitable spirit is convincingly captured by the former documentarist‘s camera. In a sleazy South American shanty town four equally sleazy desperadoes agree to drive a couple of truckloads of nitro-glycerine across the mountains. Bring a sponge to wipe the sweat up with: this classic suspense vehicle creates buckets of the stuff. A fine sourpuss vision of man‘s greed married to film-making of unbearable tension. Edinburgh: French institute. I Seven Samurai (PG) (Akira Kurosawa. Japan. 1954) Toshiro Mifune. Takahashi Simura. 200 mins. A group of timid villagers seek protection against the excesses of a brutal warlord by hiring seven heroic samurai. Seminal Japanese action picture. with a slow-building dignity matching the best ofJohn Ford. and in its stylishly aesthetic handling of screen violence a profound influence on the likes of Sam Peckinpah. Glasgow: (ii-T. I Shattered (15) (Wolfgang Petersen. US. 1991) Tom Berenger. Bob Hoskins. Greta Scaachi. Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. 98 mins. Emerging from a car crash with body and mind intact. but with no memory of the events leading up to the 'accident'. Dan Merrick (Berenger) tries to piece together his life using only contradictory scraps of information. By letting the audience know only what Merrick does. Petersen (director ofthe acclaimed submarine epic Bus 800!) cranks up an intelligent and exciting mystery thriller. Edinburgh: Dominion. I Shoot the MOON PG) Albert Finney is a successful writer with a wife (Diane Keaton) and four daughters living fairly contentedly in a large house in the country. All of which he gives up in order to be with younger mistress Karen Allen. Alan Parker‘s tale of domestic strife is infused with his usual sense of pace though the awkward narrative dooesn't seem to know where it's leading. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I The Spider's Stratagern ( 15) (Bernardo Bertolucci. Italy. 197(1) (iuilio Brogi. Alida Valli. Tino Scotti. Allen Midgett. 97mins. Returning home to investigate the defacement of his heroic father‘s memorial. Athos Magnani (Brogi) discovers a world of mysteries. omens and ambiguities. Bertolucci's version of the Borges‘ short story shows the director at the height ofhis powers. Edinburgh: Filmhouse. I Stepping Outt PG) (Lewis Gilbert. UK. 1991) Liza Minnelli. Shelley Winters. Julie Walters. Robyn Stcvan. 132 mins. Minnelli is the has-been CX-ShOWblZ dancer (this is fiction. honest). now reduced to teaching tap to a group of social misfits while convincing them to work as a team. he better people. and help revive her own dream of the spotlight. etc. etc. Despite a couple of uptempo set pieces. the film drags along. shackled to Gilbert‘s lacklustre direction and a plot that seems to demand endless rehearsal scenes. Central: MacRobert Arts Centre. I Le Strode (15) (Frederico Fellini. Italy. 1954) Guilietta Masina. Anthony Quinn. Richard Basehart. 115 mins. Fellini's wife Masina is unforgettable as a simple-minded girl in love with larger-than-life circus strongman Zampano (Quinn). who dies of a broken heart when he kills the gentle tightrope-walker (Basehart) who had befriended her. Painful story of loneliness and isolation whose vividly seedy small-town backgrounds never allow sentimentality to set in. Glasgow: GFT. I Suburban Commando (PG) (Burt Kennedy. US. 1991) Hulk Hogan.
