I Falkivaberdeen Brockville. Falkirk. 3pm.
I Hibs V SI Johnstone Easter Road Stadium. Albion Road. Edinburgh. 3pm. llibs now look assured of a place in Europe which. considering the travails of the summer. is a credit to Alex Miller and his men.
I Rangers v Motherwell Ibrox Stadium. Glasgow. 3pm. Not a walkover for Walter Smith‘s men by any stretch ofthe imagination. Motherwell are in the middle of the table on merit this year and Rangers do seem to have trouble against the less stylish but more hard-working clubs. FIRST DIVISION

SCOTTISH CUP THIRD ROUND
I Aberdeen v Hangers Pittodric Stadium. Aberdeen. 7.30pm. Naturally the tie of the round. although the Dons‘ recent ineptitude at the back makes this match a good deal less appetising than should be the case. It‘s the influence ofthose lovely people at BSkyB which has shunted the match from Saturday afternoon when the fans would prefer it to be played.

As ever at this time of the year, the lovers at traditional British sport will be in seventh heaven while those who long tor a South oi Scotland Kabaddi championship or hang-gliding over Pollok Park will be sorely disappointed. January’s sporting lixture list is dominated by the two lootballing codes with, in the aftermath ol the World Cup, the purveyors ol the oval ball being even more visible than their rounded counterparts.
Barely three months alter that passionate but stilted clash between England and Scotland, the Sassenachs return to Murraylield to defend the Grand Slam which they won last year. The teams will be virtually identical to those which contested last October’s battle but, although there are lew changes, they are ol prolound importance to both sides.
The Scots are without the great motivational and physical presence ol Finlay Calder and John Jellrey whilst the English have seen the retirement ol possibly their linest exponent oi the line-out, Paul Acklord. ll nothing else, the lack of experience at Ackiord's replacement, Martin Bayiield, may force Hob Andrew to be a little more adventurous than simply kicking for touch every time the ball reaches his hand. When the ball does go out ol play, expect to see Dodie Weir put Baylield lirme in his place in the line-out. In David Mclver on the llank and Neil Edwards at lock there's no denying that the Scots are choosing lor the luture. But to have a quarter ol the pack with no international experience may play into the hands of England‘s ageing but still lormidable forwards.

Dodie Weir, king ol the line-out
In the lootballing world, the big boys are finally to enterthe Scottish Cup after most at the non-leaguers who could cause plenty of embarrassment have been eliminated. Tie olthe round is Rangers v Aberdeen, in spite of the tact that the Dons are probably at their lowest ebb lor about a decade and the additional problem ol the match being shifted to a weekday evening because at the demands ol BSkya. The other outstanding match is between champions-elect Hearts and St Mirren. In the league it would take a madman to back the Paisley side but the cup motivates in strange ways and remember that St erren have won this competition more recently than Hearts, with a team little better than this one. Scotland v England, Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, Sat 18 Jan. Scottish Cup Third Round, Sat 25 Jan (Aberdeen v Rangers Wed 22).
Stadium. Albion Road. Edinburgh. 3pm. Partick‘s early season form has evaporated of late. unlike llibs. whose recent 5-0 drubbing of Dunfermline underlined that they are certainly a side to be reckoned with.
I Dundee Utd v Berwick Rangers Tannadice Park. Tannadice Street. Dundee. 3pm.
I SI erren V Hearts Love Street. Paisley. 3pm. The double is still on for Hearts but I suppose. technically. the same can be said forthe Saints.
I Hamilton V Falkirk Douglas Park. Hamilton. 3pm. While there are several all-Premier Division clashes today. this match-up between a classy Accies team and the consistent Falkirk is possibly the most interesting.
I Dumbarton v Huntly Boghead. Dumbarton. 3pm. Something ofa shame for the non-leaguers; not only having to play away from home but also facing the clearest leaders in any of the three divisions.
I Haith Rovers v St Johnstone Stark‘s Park. Pratt Street. Kirkcaldy. 3pm. Another
intriguing Premier‘First Division tie with genuine promotion contenders Raith facing genuine relegation possibilities. St Johnstone.
I Caledonian v Clyde orArbroath Culloden Park. Culloden. Inverness. 3pm.
I Morton v Brechln or East File Cappielow Park. Greenock. 3pm.

MCEWAN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 I Boroughmuirv Hawlck Meggetland. Colinton Road. Edinburgh. 2.30pm. One of the surprises of the year has been the
appalling form of Hawick. Truly. this
could be the end of an era. and Boroughmuir should help to accelerate the decline.
I Currie V Gala Malleny Park. Balerno. 2.30pm.
I Edinburgh Academicals v Selkirk Raeburn Place. Stockbridge. Edinburgh. 2.30pm.
I Glasgow ngh/Kelvinslde v Stewart’s/Melville Old Anniesland. Crow Road. Glasgow. 2.30pm. After scrapinga few draws early season. GHK are now where everyone expected them to be. near the bottom. More surprising is that Stewart's Melville are below them.
I Herlot's FP v Melrose Goldenacre. Bangholm Terrace. Edinburgh. 2.30pm. Certainly the match ofthe season thus far and also the match which may decide the ultimate destination of the championship. Melrose have been consistent all season but Heriot‘s. after a shaky start. are now the team to beat.
I Watsonians v Jed-Forest Myreside. Myreside Road. Edinburgh. 2.30pm.
I West at Scotland v Stirling County Burnbrae. Milngavie. Glasgow. 2.30pm. MCEWAN'S NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 I Edinburgh Wanderers v Kelso Murrayfield. Corstorphine. Edinburgh. 2.30pm.
