" Taking their name lrom Poosie

Nancy's, the famous Mauchline tavern trequented by Burns and two centuries later still serving strong drink, the live line musicians and singers in The Poosles get together to open the Edinburgh Folk Club’s 1992 season in festive spirit.

Singer Sally Barker lonned the band with her harplst triends Patsy Seddon and Mary MacMaster oi Sileas, adding superb young accordionist Karen Tweed and iiddler Jenny Gardner.

Jenny reveals a wealth 01 musical experience that belies her twenty years. ‘I started playing the violin when l was six, and played anything. We lived in Edinburgh, and I was sent to classical lessons, the Youth Orchestra, Lothian Fiddle Orchestra and the Scottish Symphonia. But I never thought I would be playing music for a living. To do that you had to go to music college, teacher training, or whatever. No one told me it was an option to iust go and play in bands.

‘But that's what happened. I moved to Bermuda with my parents when I was about sixteen, even played In a wee tolk band “Strings and Things”. There's a talk club out there, they got Boys or The Lough, Silly Wizard, Allan

- good bands, but I had enough after a year and came back to Edinburgh to go to college. I was walking over George IV Bridge, carrying the fiddle one day and heard some live music coming out oi a pub. Inside, I met all the Edinburgh traditional music crowd, and I’ve been playing non-stop ever since.‘

In the immediate luture, she is committed to a tour of the States with piper Hamish Moore and a Cape Breton piano player. Previous spells with various groups include Dave Robb And The Filmmakers, theatre work includes ‘The Cheviot, The Stag And The Black, Black Oil’, and she is currently winding up her long association with the iunk iolkabilly Eat the Seats, helping phase in her replacement over a short holiday Highland tour.

‘I’ve always played but never realised I would be able to improvise, but that’s what's happening. Eat The Seats is mental, I can go ape on the liddle. But it’s just the icing on the cake. l'd often like to play something more rhythmic, like the bass player and the drummer. I just wanna play rock and roll!‘ (Norman Chalmers)
