INDEX FILM
Almodovar's exaggerated sexual farrago is interesting as a sort of overheated melodrama. though the lack of narrative control near the end does let the film down. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Liebestrum (18) (Mike Figgis. US. 1991) Kevin Anderson. Pamela Gidley. Bill Pullman. Kim Novak. 95 mins. See review. General release (from 10 Jan). I Little Shop 01 Honors (PG) (Frank ()2. US. 1986) Rick Moranis. Ellen Greene. Steve Martin. 94 mins. Deep in the florist something is stirring. as meek green-fingered type discovers that his favourite plant. Audrey. is actually a flesh—craving alien from outer space. Daft. enjoyable screen version of the stage musical. with funny foliage effects. and a beezer cameo from Martin as a biker dentist. Glasgow: GF'T.
I London Kills Me (18) (Hanif Kureishi. UK. 1991) Justin Chadwick. Steven Mackintosh. Emer McCourt. 105 mins. His screenplays for My Beautiful Latmdrette and Sammy and Rosie (Jet Laid may have had their detractors. but Hanif Kureishi's directorial debut has shot straight to the top of the Worst Film of the Year chart of those who have seen it. Bungling drug hustler Clint (Chadwick) needs new shoes so he can get a straight job. but before then must go through a series of mildly amusing/tediously annoying escapades with druggie chums. Has the feel of a ‘slice of low-life‘ piece by someone who hasn't a clue what he‘s talking about. Edinburgh; Cameo-
I Manhunter (18) (Michael Mann. US. 1987) William 1.. Petersen. Tom Noonan. Brian Cox. Kim Griest. 119 mins. FBI agent Petersen returns from psychiatric treatment to face another case. using his customary technique for tracking down serial killers by recreating their train of thought. In the past this has proved all too wearing on his own mental state. and when faced with evidence of a killer who slays whole families every lunar cycle. he finds himself back on the. brink. Convincing and disturbing adult thriller with effortlessly stylish use of the wide screen. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Manon Des Sources (PG) (Claude Berri. France/Italy. 1986) Yves Montand. Daniel Auteuil. Emmanuelle Beart. 114 mins. Ten years after the demise of Jean de Florette. the Soubeyrans run a prosperous carnation farm. Jean‘s daughter has grown into an alluring young woman and sets out to wreak her revenge. Steering this epic rural saga towards the
' realms of Greek tragedy. this is a full and satisfying second half that explores the . suffering of the guilty as they pay a crippling penance for man‘s greed and
envy. The production values are as high as ever and Auteuil assumes Depardieu's mantle in his development from glaikit idiot to broken-hearted suitor. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Matador (18) (Pedro Almadovar. Spain. 1986) Assumpta Serna. Antonio Banderas. Nancho Martinez. Eva Como. 96 mins. See review. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

From its autobiographical roots. Meeting Venus builds into a metaphor for the squabbling of a unified Europe. but despite the great music. it‘s let down by a tacky and distracting love subplot. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
I Mephisto (15) (1stvan Szabo. Hungary. 1981) Klaus Maria Brandauer. lldiko Bansagi. Krystyna Janda. 144 mins. Hogen. one of pre-war Germany‘s most

I Monsieur Hulot‘s Holiday (PG) (Jacques Tati. France. 1953) Jacques Tati. Nathalie Pascaud. Michelle Rolla. 91 mins. M. Hulot. the bachelor with the accident-prone touch. arrives at a jaunty coastal resort and devastation very soon ensues. Comic timing at its most irresistible. as Tati gets away with a number of memorable. slow-burning gags. all undercut by the stabbing notion that we all have an uncle exactly like
Hulot. Edinburgh; Filmhouse.
I Monty Python's Meaning 01 Lite (18) (Terry Jones. UK. 1983) John Cleese. Graham Chapman. Michael Palin. Eric Idle. 103 mins. Ragbag of occasionally gross Python sketches loosely following this mortal coil from womb to grave. Watch out for the exploding Mr Creosote.
5 Glasgow: Grosvenor.
I Near Dark (18) (Katherine Bigelow. US. 1987) Adrian Pasdar. Jenny Wright. Lance Henriksen. 98 mins. Rapper lce-T plays an undercover cop dedicated to smashing a powerful gang who run a drugs empire. But when his cover is blown. a series of violent confrontations follow. Director Van Peebles delivers a gripping work of fiction based on a frightening world of fact. while packing in an impressive quotient of Uzi fire and hot babe action. Glasgow: GET.
I Nosferatu The Vampire (Werner Hermg, W.Germany/France. 1979) Klaus Kinski. Isabelle Adjani. Bruno Ganz. 107 mins. Disappointingly turgid remake of the expressionist classic. whose main redeeming feature is the splendid make-up and mesmerising presence of
Kinski. Edinburgh: Cameo. I The Object of Beauty (15) (Michael
Lindsay—Hogg. UK. 1991) John
Malkovich. Andie MacDowell. Rudi Davies. Bill Paterson. 105 mins. See review. Glasgow: GET. Edinburgh:
Cameo. i I Paris Trout (18) (Stephen (iyllenhaal.

fails to keep up the payments on a car he
; bought from shady businessman Paris
Trout. the latter assumes white superiority and kills his client's sister. But this drives his wife into the arms of a local lawyer.
3 albeit after an unbelievably gratuitous sex ~ scene that goes well beyond anything
Frank even imagined in Blue Velvet.
Interesting. but by no means stunning.
Edinburgh: Cameo.
I The People Under The Stairs (18) (Wes Craven. US. 1991) Brandon Adams. Everett McGill. Wendy Robie. A.J. Langer. 102 mins. See review. General release (from 26 Dec).

Bigelow tackles cliches of buddy partnerships. macho
