Thanks to the extortionate amount of money people are prepared to pay for them. art works have the reputation of being formidably expensive — you might as well sign Gary Lineker as try buying a small painting by a Big Name. The truth of course, is not so bleak — good art works are available at affordable prices. often in small galleries or cafes, at annual art college summer degree shows, and especially at the ubiquitous ‘Small Paintings for Christmas' exhibitions. A perusal of this month's exhibitions suggests some good ideas for Christmas— several galleries have offered us a foretaste ofwhat will be on offer. This year‘s Compass Gallery seasonal show. for instance, features paintings from £20—£3000— with prints by Neil MacPherson and Ken Fergusson at the lower end of the scale, (a Bet Low will set you back : £675 and a Leslie Banks £550, for the 3 record). They also stock ‘very affordable‘ ceramics and jewellery. The Glasgow Print Studio is showing a J large number ofworks. mostly by their own members. including ! Ashley Cook (recently featured in l these pages) and the acclaimed I Joseph Davie. Unframed etchings, I woodcuts and linocuts mostly cost between £40and£150.while The i Edinburgh Printmakers' Workshop is l l
hosting an encouraging Prints under [50 show ofworks by their members, including Douglas Gray‘s irresistible . ‘witty woodcuts ofwine bar l drinkers‘.
For photography fans, the Portfolio Gallery offers prints. starting at £45, by Scottish photographers including David Williams and Patricia Macdonald, and by the internationally renowned Bert Hardy, Arthur Tress (he of the surreal Fish Tank Sonata show), Lee Friedlander and Fay Godwin. A

good selection of photographic books, starting at £10— including Henri Cartier Bresson’s America in Passing (£32) — will suit humbler budgets. Stills also has a large collection of books and cards.
Small-time buyers will also find plenty to please at the Open Eye Gallery‘s On a Small Scale exhibition (for which no painting must be larger than 10‘ by 8‘). More than 300 pictures are on show, from £10—£500, as well as some very impressive ceramics. Similarly, Hanover Fine Arts has a large collection ofwatercolours, oils, acrylics and drawings, starting at £7.50 for a miniature watercolour, as well as small sculptures, woodcarvings and Anne Hughes’s jewellery (£5—£12.90) and ceramics (£9.95—£79). The Billiard Room Art Company has amassed sculpture, ceramics and jewellery, as well as paintings and prints by Helen Flockhart, Alexandra Gardner and many others. For brilliant, quirky ceramics and jewellery, the prospective present-buyers should certainly go to Edinburgh’s Scottish Gallery, where prices start at £5. The gallery‘s Christmas collection of 100 or so ‘predominantly small’ pictures includes John Bellany, Peter Howson, Joseph Urie and John Houston. The Klngiisher Gallery is selling prints, paintings and small sculptures, from £50, in aid of the ‘Sick Kids' appeal while Flying Colours Gallery will be catering for the better-heeled, with prices starting in the region of£200, and works by established artists, Fullarton, Mackesy, Gillespie and others, dearer than this.
Other Christmas exhibitions worth perusing are, in Glasgow, at the Glasgow Group Gallery, lnterdec and the 908 Gallery; in Edinburgh, at Flying Colours Gallery, the Citizens' Studios, Barnes and Fitzgerald glass studio and the Shore Gallery. For a real arts and crafts jamboree, don’t miss the Scottish Artists and Artist Craftsmen annual exhibition of three-dimensional work, prints, photographs, ceramics, jewellery, glass and furniture — prices range from a few pounds to £45,000. . .
