fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket, Virgin. Union Street. 226 4679. Another AOR stalwart about whom it becomes increasingly difficult to talk without lapsing into aphorisms. Personally his watered-down blues workouts make me feel about a hundred years old and sap me ofthe strength of feeling necessary to form an opinion.

I lntaslella King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Finally lntastella get the hang ofgalaetic electro-pop. hitting the mark withtheir third single ‘Century‘ a full-blown swirling dance epic. where previous efforts had been disappointingly half-baked. Stella‘s milky vocals and flashy dress sense add an extra level of interest. '

I The Shillelaghs and Charlie Devlin Cotton Club. Scott Street. 3320712. 11pm. £3.50 (£2.50 with voucher). Scotland‘s answer to The Wolfetones. supported by rebel music's answer to the Rochdaie Cowboy. Some not very appealing sectarian undercurrents at work here.

I Face The World (upstairs) Traders, Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free. I The Matter Gables, Puppy Faiand Whirling Pig Dervish (downstairs) Traders. Giassford Street. 553 6246. 10pm. Free. The Edinburgh thrashers return with yet another singer this time it's the Glasgow-based Joyce from We Are The Men and perhaps they‘ll make greater strides into mass consciousness with her at the helm. Don‘t miss Whirling Pig Dervish if your sense of fun is titillatcd by live chaos and minced-up, psychotic versions of Sham 69 and iiaysi Fantayzee.

I The Naked Flames Polar. Pig and Firkin. Buchanan Street. 9pm. Free. Another indie trio from Glasgow who impress with their range of material one minute it‘s Smithsian angst-ridden jangle. the next it‘s garage grunge.

I There Goes The World Drum and Monkey, Hope Street. 332 1893. 10pm. Free.

I GNC Freepost Couch and Slouch. Maxwell Street. 248 6085. 10pm. Free. Three acts of varying descriptions from Glasgow North College.

I Moose. Stereolab and Perspex White Out Venue. Calton Road, 557 3073. So far. the hotly-tipped Moose‘s noise excursions have been less than earth-shattering. but we live in hope. Their new EP. Reprise. has them going slightly deranged for a six-and-a-half-minute country song inspired by Glen Campbell. which can only be a good sign. Stereolab are a mystery to us. but we‘ll be there in force for Perspex White Out. See preview.

I Red Hot And Blue Platform One, Rutland Street, 225 2433. 9pm. Free. Rock‘n‘roll. I Blue Rinse Preservation Hall. Victoria Street, 226 3816. 9.30pm. Free.

I The Kleptomanlacs St James Oyster Bar, Calton Road. 557 2925. 9pm. Free.

FRIDAY 29 Glasgow

I Chris Rea SECC. Finnieston Quay. 248 3000. 6.30pm. £15.35. £13.80 plus booking fee. Tickets from Just The Ticket. Virgin, Union Street. 226 4679. See Thurs 28.

I The Colour Wheel and Mnaga a Zdorp King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Glasgow‘s Colour Wheel (remember. The Catherine Wheel that were '.’) are supported tonight by a band who have been acclaimed as‘the Czechoslovakian equivalent of The Smiths‘. albeit with saxophone and keyboards. Their singer. Petr: found himself ostracised by the communist regime for daring to send a tape ofthe band to the BBC. and if you want to know why they were considered enemies of the state. they 've translated all their lyricsinto English for this tour.

I The Hummingbirds, Angel Heart and One World Nice‘n‘Sleazy. Sauchiehall Street. 9pm. L3. This varied triple bill oflocal familiarities is converging to raise money for a Stopover pilot project called Contact Point which hopes to provide a drop~in centre and support group for people who were homeless and have only recently moved into accommodation.

I The Noctumals Mandela Bar. Strathclydc University Union.John Street. 552 1895. 10pm. £1.50. Students and guests. Admission charge includes entry to the union discos.

I The Lost Soul Band Jordanhill College of Education, Southbrae Drive. 959 1232.

I Glasgow Songwriters Montrose Bar. (.‘arrick Street. 221 7564. See Fri 22.

I Movie Culture Traders. Glassford Street. 552 6246. 10pm. Free.

I Roundabout Clubhouse. Old Sneddon Street. Paisley. 889 4706. 8.30pm. £1.50 (advance). £2 (door). Local band who unsuccessfully try to combine the kind of pleasing jangle pop ofThe Go-Betweens with the vocal distinctiveness of Felt. and end up sounding like a passable indie combo but with histrionic vocals and bad lyrics.

Edinburgh

I Deacon Blue Playhouse Theatre. Greenside Place. 557 2590. 7.30pm. SOLD OUT. The Scottish Pride set offon a trek which culminates, in a months time. a mere 40 miles away. at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. At time ofwriting. Ricky Ross was nursing a sore throat, which we hope will carry him through this tour without his voice giving out on him. And we thought his vocals on lie/low Hoodlums we re meant to sound like that. I Nirvana. Captain America and Shonan Knife Calton Studios. Calton Road. 556 706. SOLD OUT. Did anyone see Nirvana‘s Kurt Cobain sporting a Captain America T-shirt on The Word recently? Captain America‘s Eugene Kelly returned the favour the next night at a BMX Bandits gig by wearing a Nirvana T—shirt. though whether he shared Kurt‘s opinions on the shagability of Hole‘s Courtney Love went unrecorded. Anyway. you can‘t argue with record sales and despite a lengthy two-year wait between albums. Nirvana are poised to become the biggest American import since Sonic Youth. Captain America back the release oftheir debut EP on Paperhouse and Shonan Knife by all accounts are some mad Japanese sub-karaoke casualties.

I The Sandkings and Machine Gun Feedback Potterrow Student Union. Potterrow. 667 0214. Yet more harmless jolly japery in the style of— wait for it— The Wonder Stuff. Wolverhampton‘s Sandkings have survived so far by virtue of enthusiastic live performance as opposed to memorable songs. Vocalist Jaz Man thinks he‘s a star, the band obviously love what they‘re doing. but those ofus standing up the back are shuffling our feet

impatiently waiting for an event that never
