Tipped Edinburgh outfit formed from ex-members of Savana Lamar and Steelchain and playing laid-back dance p0p with subtle Latin influences. The admission charge includes entry to the union discos.

I The Persuaders Magoo‘s. Croft Street. Kilmarnock. 0563 38940. An Aberdeen-based band who‘ve played quite a few gigs in the area recently. Graduates of the old school of songwriting. they have a 60s-soul influence to their riffing. a heavier rock influence coming from the other direction and a knack for melody.

I The Pastels and Jad Fair 1 Iipster Club. Victoria Street. Nice to see a burst of activity from a Scottish band who seem to have weathered every trend and stayed defiantly themselves. integrity intact. In the last few weeks. we‘ve seen two singles and a tour in quick succession. plus coverage in some ofthe grown-up papers.
Tonight. they’re playing with Jad Fair. whose address book must read like a Who's Who of the American underground (HalfJapanese. Maureen Tucker. etc). If you‘ve never tried the sadly underrated Pastels before. perhaps through being put off by the legions of cuties that sprung up in their wake. now is the time.
I Revolver and Penn Venue, Calton Road. 557 3073. A trio of pretty adolescents from London who unleashed their fairly-good- but-not-about-to-set-the~world.alight ‘Heaven Sent An Angel' debut a few months ago. They‘ll be out to demonstrate they have more than one song totheir name (we hope) and to prove they owe their lightning recognition to more than their fringes. effects pedals and proximity to the national music press. Likely to be outclassed by the wondrous young Glasgow band Fenn.

Cumbernauld‘s greatest contribution to popular culture since Stu Who? lost his voice. the Barkys are two brothers who work offtheir cosmonaut obsession with no little musical expertise, accompanied by pre-programmed drums. Accessible. unpretentious. irreverent and fun.

4679. It’s probable that Sting‘s detractors have allowed the offputting muso connotations of his music to spread too far. Lest we forget. Sting has penneda host of tenacious songs. from the more inspiring end of the rock spectrum to the less pseud-orientated end of the jazzy spectrum. But he has written some stinkers too. Not the place to turn for excess and anarchy. Support comes from Vinx. former Olympic track and field star turned percussionist.

I Dodgy Strathclyde University Union. John Street. 552 1895. 9pm. £3. Students and guests. Another London trio who have already earned favourable comparisons with the celectically-minded likes of Five Thirty. Dodgy recently embarked on a self-assembly tour. whereby they picked the date and the town and the punters picked the venue. Reports that their Glasgow gig took place in the public toilets next to the Balomock Scout Hall were greatly exaggerated. Check out their epic. mind-contorting single ‘Easy Way' for the best tour advertisement possible.
