mins. A small French town in the immediate aftermath of World War Two is the setting for Berri's wordy examination ofpolitical manoevrings. Tensions are high between the now dominant Communists and those suspected of sheltering a former collaborator. but it would appear that Depardieu‘s loudmouth barman knows too much about what really went on during the war years. Removed from the relevence of its home country. the plot struggles to raise itself above the uninvolvingly irritating. Edinburgh: Cameo.
I Venus Peter ( 12) (Ian Sellar. UK. 1989) Ray McAnally. Gordon R. Strachan. David Hayman. 92 mins. Affecting adaptation shot on Orkney of Scots writer Christopher Rush's impressionistic A Twelvemonrh And/1 Day. set in a fishing village in the 1950s. One of McAnally‘s last roles casts him beautifully as the sympathetic grandfather of Peter. played by nine-year-old Strachan (who is not to be confused with the diminutive Scottish midfield genius) in this moving study ofa dying community seen through the eyes of a young boy. Edinburgh: Chambers Street Museum.

Animated star Roger Rabbit hires private dick lioskins to keep tabs on his wife. but he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens the future of Toontown itself. An amazing technical achievement for the interaction of cartoons and live action. this box office winner spoofs the film noir genre while milking the Tex Avery-style cartoon violence for all it‘s worth. I Woman of the Dunes ( 18) (Hiroshi Teshigahara. Japan. 1964) Ejii Okada. Kyoko Kishida. 127 mins. Unavailable for many years in the UK. Teshigahara’s cruel and erotic thriler has been re-released in a new print. An entomologist is trapped by mysterious villagers and is forced to live with a beautiful but inarticulate woman in an escape-proof sandpit. A visual masterpiece. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.
