There are a lot at white plastic buckets in this year’s Scottish Society of Artists exhibition at the RSA. They greet the visitor— strung up and sliced - as he ascends the staircase into Playlair‘s noble interiors, then they re-appear towards the rear ol the Academy. At the boisterous opening (the atmosphere was about as salubrious as Waverley Station when Ribs are playing), somebody asked it they were intended as sick receptacles. In fact they lorm part oi a tedious installation by a Dutch artist called Peter Geraedts. And there are other installations by continental
invitees which contrive to be just as passe, it not quite so unimaginative.
It is sad that the organisers could not have iound something more inspiring, lor the Society’s history ol introducing loreign talent to these shores is distinguished: in 1932 Edvard Munch (then generally unknown and, where known, thought to be controversial) was shown thanks to the younger MacTaggart’s Norwegian wile; later came German expressionists, the ecole de Paris and the American wild boys 01 the 50s. In the commemorative book which accompanies this centenary show, much is made at this record, although the Society’s main purpose has always been to allow unrecognised Scottish talent to be exhibited alongside established names. For the past twenty years most oi that unrecognised talent has remained just that, though the tradition among Scottish art college graduates oi contributing to the SSA has meant that anybody who has become anybody has taken part at some time or another.
Suttice it to say that the ‘lree-lor-all' raison d'étre ol the exhibition means that 90 per cent at the work included is weird, mannered, inconsequential, unresolved and unrewarding rubbish; to allude to the ten per cent which is not, would be to hold up to scorn those artists at quality who have so little sell-respect that they allow their work to be shown in such company. An historical section which features a host of the best-known names in late 19th and 20th century Scottish art- McTaggart, Guthrie, Hornet, Cowie, Redpath and Eardley— terms a poignant reminder ol the Society’s past glories.
