During the process of getting her group of social misfits ready for their big performance in a charity show. she has to convince them to work as a team, be better people. revive her own dream of the spotlight , etc. etc. Despite a couple of uptempo set pieces. the film drags along. shackled to Gilbert‘s lacklustre direction and a plot that seems to demand endless rehearsal scenes. While on a college field trip to F rance. Richard Gricco (star of TV‘s 21 Jump Street) is mistaken for a top .. secret service man and finds himself in a world of spies, lies and hi-tech armoury. A creaky Bond spoof that revels in having adversaries called Ilsa Grunt and Augustus Steranko, and which will leave all Roger Moore fans reasonably stirred. if not exactly shaken. A quick return for the original shell-suits. although with less plot and less violence than the original. The evil Shredder has decided to grow a couple of mutants of his own. and it seems thatonly our four adolescent amphibians can save the day with the odd pizza reference and a truly dire ‘Ninja Rap’ (with the painfully embarrassing Vanilla Ice). Linda Hamilton, Edward Furlong. Robert Patrick. 136 mins. The most expensive film ever made. In a reprogrammed role that says much about his changed image since the first movie, Arnie becomes the underdog fighting to protect mother and child from another more advanced cyborg. With an element of uncontrived human compassion lurking throughout the gloriously expensive

I The Third Man (PG) (Carol Reed. UK. 1949) Joseph Cotten. Alida Valli. Trevor Howard. Orson Welles. 104 mins. Post-war Vienna and pulp writerJoseph Cotten moves through corruption on every corner to try to find his old mate Harry Lime, who turns out to be not everything his friend expected. Nigh-pcrfect screen experience with strong plotting and characterisation from Graham Greene’s screenplay. Anton Karas‘ memorable zither music and. of course. the truly electrifying presence of Welles at his peak as the enigmatic Lime. Look out for the famous ‘cuckoo clock‘ speech which the big man wrote for himself. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

I Tokyo-Ga (U) (Wim Wenders. Germany. 1984) Chishu Ryu. Yuharu Atsuta. Werner Herzog. 95 mins. Moving diary account of Wenders‘ impressions of Tokyo, which shows the inﬂuence of Japanese filmmaker Yasujiro Ozu. The bizarre images of the Japanese at play are interspersed with interviews with Ozu‘s lead actor and cameraman. Edinburgh: Filmhouse.

Columbian terrorists hold a rich kids’ school hostage. and it‘s up to our young rebel heroes to win the day — in other words. it’s the clean-cut Coke generation versus the clean. cut coke generation. Surprisingly gripping and violent for its certificate, it‘s let down by trite dialogue and too much young male bonding. lmagineNew Kids On The Block stumbling into a Steven Seagal movie. and you‘re most of the way there. Patsy‘Kensit stars as a come-of—agc modern girl. whose intimate details are told in tabloid kiss and tell fashion straight to the omnipresent camera. Stuffy law courts and Brighton pier act as the backdrop to this SOs-style crime thriller. which has Neason as a sleazy private eye who sets up the material for divorce cases until he gets caught up in a double murder. A small French town in the immediate aftermath of World War Two is the setting for Berri‘s wordy examination of political manoevrings. Tensionsare high between the now dominant Communists and those suspected of sheltering a former collaborator. but it would appear that Depardieu's loudmouth barman knows too much about what really went on during the war years. Removed from the relevence of its home country. the plot struggles to raise itself above the uninvolvingly irritating. Glasgow: GFT.

I Where Angels Fear To Tread (PG) (Charles Sturridge. UK. 1991 ) Helen Mirren. Helena Bonham Carter. Judy Davis. Rupert Graves. 113 mins. On a journey to Italy with her young companion Caroline (Bonham Carter). recently widowed Lilia Herriton (Mirren) falls in love with an impoverished ltalian. but dies giving birth to his child. Family troubles ensue as 1 {erriton‘s mother tries to bring the baby back to England. This latest EM. Forster adaptation is basically nothing more than Room With/1 View— Par15. Glasgow: GET.

The bloody but emotionally sensitive tale 0le battle to the death between rough—riding Texans and Mexican revolutionaries. I The Wolves of Willoughby Chase ( PG) (Stuart Orme. UK. 1989) Stephanie Beacham. Mel Smith. GeraldineJames. 93 mins. Based on the eponymous book by Joan Aitken the film is set in a wolf-infested Victorian Britain. Beacham is the villainess in charge of the mansionto which the young heroes are sent. A rather scarey adaptation is brightened considerably by superb production design by Derek Jarman’s regular chum and collaborator Chris Hobbs. Glasgow: GF’I’.
