The disturbing thing is that T‘Pau seem to be enthusiastic and committed to their work. which probably means that theywill continue to inflict unnecessary torture on the public for some time to come.

I The Persuaders Wee Red Bar. Edinburgh College of Art. Lauriston Place. 229 1442. An Aberdeen-based band playing quite a few gigs in the area at the moment. Graduates of the old school of songwriting. they have a 60s soul influence to their riffing. a heavier rock influence coming from the opposite direction and a knack for melody.

I UVU and Long Finn Killie Subway. Cow-gate. £1.50. An alternative/thrash disco from 9pm—2am. with an unusual couplingof bands: psychedelicthrash-pop supported by manic folk.

An eight-piece band in the popular and fashionable Blues Brothers mode. they originated in Edinburgh as an a cappella group and have since switched to a full band line-up. I The Kevin McDermott Orchestra and Nick Robertson Barrowland. Gallowgate. 552 4601 . 7.30pm. £6 plus booking fee. A big venture for the group as they hope to confirm the growing home support for their spirited rock. and prove that you can do it without the aid of a huge record company. Following the Scottish success of their Bedazzled album comes the release of ‘Everything Is Over' from it.
I The Average White Band Pavilion Theatre. Renfield Street. 332 1846. 7pm. £8. £7. The first Scottish funk band to make an impression anywhere. let alone the States. come with a dubious line in publicity and probably beards to match. but we will forgive them everything ifonly they‘ll play ‘Pick Up the Pieces‘.
I Worldwide Pavilion Theatre. Renfield Street. 332 1846. Midnight. £7.50. Worldwide are the only band to be featured in this series of midnight cabarets at the Pavilion. Tonight they have the unusual task of supporting Cynthia Payne. Parrot and Liz Ferguson (who is so like her brother Craig. that I swear it's him in drag).
I The Family Cat and 35 Summers King Tut's Wah Wah Hut. St Vincent Street. 221 5279. 9pm. £4. Freneticindie eccentrics The Family Cat have been miaowing noisily at the back door ofthc Trendy Fraternity House for a while now with little official attention channelled in their direction. 35 Summers haven‘t been around long enough to boast any following to speak of but a clutch of spirited ifgeneric indie dance singles seems to be pointing them in the right direction.

Marsha Fresca have been taking things more steadily recently. concentrating on completing their Mick McNeil-produced demo. Funk rock. but not the kind popularised by Red Hot Chilli Peppers. more INXS with a hard riffing streak.
