It the smell of petrol and the mighty throb oi 500cc ol highly-tuned motorbike pounding round a miniscule
- track at 70mph leaves you weak at the
knees, then you’ll probably be praying for a dry afternoon on Sunday 6. The Shawtield Speedway Stadium in Glasgow will be hosting the deciding Inter-Nations Championship match of the 1991 season — abandoned atterjust a few races in July due to torrential rain.
The top 21 riders from Britain,
' Australia and Sweden will be
competing in the eighteen~race meeting, with the Swedes generally
thought to have the strongest team.
. Although the British team has recently ‘ lost some of their better riders due to
injury, both they and the Swedes took
one of the previous heats each.
While they are not in with much of a chance, promoter Neil Maciarlane reckons thatthe local support will be
behind the Australian team who are fielding the in-torm Jason Lyons. ‘He onlyjoined us (Glasgow Tigers) last year as a rookie, but already he’s one of the hottest prospects to come out of Australia recently,‘ says Maciarlane. Lyons will be ably supported by Shane Bowes, who is currently wowing the thousands who regularly turn out for speedway in Poland.
But the real throttle-merchants to thrill the young audience at Shawlands will be world number two Tony Rickardsson and Henka Gustasson of Sweden. ‘They are young, dynamic and don’t know the meaning of the word “accident”, according to Maciarlane, who says that Speedway makes for a different breed oi people. ‘They are just nutters. Would you hurtle round a bend at 70 miles an hour on a motorbike with no brakes?‘ (Thom Dibdin)
The Inter-Nations match is at Shawtield Stadium, Glasgow at 3pm on Sunday 6.
