drive across. and by the time Yosemite signs started to appear on the roadside. the sky had turned from roseate pink to lugubrious black. 1 was extremely glad not to be alone in the car. Yosemite is a vast wilderness of forest and mountain. daunting at night because ofits absolute darkness and silence. Even the car radio was struck dumb by immense walls ofmountain. It was the kind Of place I had seen before only in nature documentaries. where the avuncular narrator says things like ‘Oh-Ohhh. here comes that bear again' —- a phrase which could have been relevant when we discovered signs hammered into the ground saying. ‘Keep food locked away — bears sometimes roam campsites‘.
I did not sleep very well that night. not having been psychologically prepared for roaming bears nor bodily prepared for a couple of feet ofsnow on the ground and a
temperature of about minus 3 (it had
been 81 in San Francisco). The next two days were spent scaling steep pathways for spectacular views of Yosemite‘s mountains. valleys and waterfalls. We came across a very pretty coyote and a herd of deer — no bears. though.
Yosemite is the home ofthe sequoia. or giant redwood — mammoth and beautiful trees the colour of Orang Utans and the height of about twenty particularly

Baseball. Oakland Stadium tall giraffes. Later in the week. we travelled to a forest in northern California which contained petrified trees whose age (3.000.000 years) made the 3000-year-old sequoias seem like saplings. Unfortunately the grandeur ofthe stone trees was compromised by distressing numbers ofgarden gnomes which had managed to penetrate the forest and were to be found sitting coyly on random logs and among wood piles.
Hardened by two days of rough living. and several pounds thinner after huge blue jays had stolen all our sandwiches. we returned noth to spend our last week in Berkeley. Staying in a friend‘s wooden cabin at the top ofthe Berkeley hills. we discovered at nearby Strawberry Canyon a fantastic. hazy view of the Bay area. complete with a miniature Golden Gate. Famed for its Bohemian outlook ancfi‘exotic restaurants. Berkeley provides
wonderfully laid-back alternatives to §
scrambling up hillsides. We spent a lot of time at ‘Peet‘s (.‘offee' — a deeply aromatic experience which has become something ofan obsession among Berkeley residents. Established in the 60s by Dutchman Alfred Peet. it offers 30 varieties ofcoffee and all the necessary paraphernalia — there is even a world-wide mail order service for people unable to lope into town to pick it up.
