I Gig Guide The next few weeks see the PA and live scene hotting up considerably on the West coast. The Hyper club at Kilmarnock‘s Hippodrome plays host to Ariel and Manchester DJ Justin Robertson from the Most Excellent Posse, on 22 Sept while a week later chart stars Prodigy (of ‘Charly Says‘ fame) will be appearing.
Meanwhile, over in The Metropolis, Saltcoats one of the most unmissable gigs will be happening. On 6 Oct a quartet of Edinburgh acts - Ege Bam Yasi. The Orange Grove. Botany 5 and headliners Fini Tribe — will be going through their paces. Botany 5 and FiniTribe will also be turning up at Glasgow‘s Mayfair on 13 October along with the Slam DJs. another night to miss at your peril.
TURNTABLE
This week’s lave live tracks are chosen lor us by the lovely and multi-talented Gareth Sommerville, whose club CV includes such Edinburgh all-time greats as the Kangaroo Klub and, more recently, Tattoo (which came to an unfortunate end last lortnlght). You will, no doubt, be able to check him out somewhere in the capital soon though. Watch this space . . .
1. DSK: What Would We Do (US FFRR) A real stunner at a track that combines a strong vocal and Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley‘s
remixing skills to great eliect. Massive.
2. Chocolate Fudge: In A Fantasy (Azuli)
Currently going down very well, this track utilises a sample from Sister Sledge's ‘Greatest Dancer’ and is a guaranteed lloorillier.
3. Pal Joey: Spend The Night (US Loop Di’ Loop)
Not as jazzy as some of his previous releases, but a very classy tune none the less. Its simple piano lines are all set nicely by the ‘Spend The Night’ sample from Those Guys ‘Tonite’.
4. Chosen Few: Positivity (US Fokus) A cool record with a nice summery vibe. A very pleasant vocal is backed by some nice guitars and saxophones. Also with a strong Mayday-type techno-lurcher on the B-side, this is receiving heavy rotation from yours truly.
5. Sample Minded: Eternity (US Bottom Line)
ll this was released on Nu-Groove or Strictly Rhythm it would be receiving praise and playlisting in equal quantities. Unfortunately, it is released on the relatively unknown Bottom Line Records, which I believe may be a label to look out lor in the future.

Popular sound system with the best of ragamuffin and reggae— and any club that propagandises against compact discs on its posters has its heart in the right place. I Chopper at Club Xchange. 11pm—3am. £1 with leaflet/UB40/matric card. New venture from the Tankin‘ posse playing their usual across-the-board mix - Aretha. Beatles, Caveman, Doors, 808 State, Flowered Up, erm. can‘t remember the ‘G‘ artiste. Curiously there doesn't appear to be a full charge entry fee, because the lads assume all their punters will be either students. unemployed or mingy types who scour pubs for reduced admission flyers. Vodka 50p and pints£l.
I Soul Cellar at the Tunnel.
11pm—3.30am. £3. New night alongthe old Soul Kitchen lines, with deep soul in an ambient. underground atmosphere in rooms two and three - ie not the main one. Colin Barr himself is the DJ,playing classic dance, rare groove and hip hop. with guests every week.
I The Tunnel First Birthday Party at the Tunnel. Replacing the Soul Cellar on Wed 25. The Tunnel celebrates itself as only it knows how.
